BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP)—
World No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne announced Saturday she would skip next year's Fed Cup and concentrate on WTA events and the Olympics.
Henin-Hardenne, who also pulled out of this year's Fed Cup finals in Moscow, said the defense of her French and U.S. Open titles and her continued pursuit of the top ranking combined with playing at the Olympics would leave no time for the team competition.
"Certainly not next year when we have the Olympics. It is too much," she said in Saturday's edition of Le Soir.
It was unclear whether Belgium's No. 2 player, Kim Clijsters, who also skipped this year's Fed Cup finals, would play in next year's competition.
Belgium won the Fed Cup two years ago when both Clijsters and Henin-Hardenne played in the final.
This year too, Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters had been dominant as Belgium beat Austria and Slovakia 5-0 to qualify for the final tournament.
