[Rumor]Mets Near Deal With Moises Alou
The Mets and the free-agent outfielder Moises Alou are close to agreeing on a
one-year contract for $8 million to $10 million, a major league executive
with knowledge of the negotiations said yesterday.
The signing of Alou would probably signal the end of Cliff Floyd’s four-year
Mets tenure and make the 21-year-old outfield prospect Lastings Milledge
expendable as the team tries to acquire an elite pitcher via a trade.
The Mets are more willing to trade Milledge than they were during the season,
provided they get the right starting pitching, the executive said. The
Chicago White Sox want one of the Mets’ premier pitching prospects, Phillip
Humber or Mike Pelfrey, and the Mets, as of now, are unwilling to part with
them for Javier Vázquez or Freddy García.
The Mets struggled against left-handed pitching after trading Xavier Nady
during the season, and Alou would give them a respected right-handed bat.
Alou would probably start in left field and be replaced in the late innings
by Endy Chavez,a more adept fielder. Alou, 40, would be the fourth player older than 35
the Mets have signed this off-season. Last season, Alou’s 15th in the
majors, he played 98 games for San Francisco and hit .301 with 22 home runs
and 74 runs batted in.
