Manuel, Mets agree to new contract
Two-year deal includes option for third year, sources confirmed
By Marty Noble / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- One day after Jeff Wilpon suggested the Mets might use "addition
by subtraction" as a means of improving the team for 2009, the process has
indeed been implemented, though hardly as anticipated. The Mets have added a
manager and removed -- i.e., subtracted -- a word from the job title. Jerry
Manuel no longer is "interim." He is the Mets' manager, period.
A day after general manager Omar Minaya said he "probably" would continue to
negotiate with Manuel, he did so, and Manuel agreed to a contract for the
2009 and 2010 seasons that includes an option for 2011. The agreement,
confirmed by several people familiar with Mets developments, was expected to
be announced Saturday.
Minaya hardly seemed pessimistic about signing Manuel Thursday, saying "We'll
see how it ends up, but I always think of good things and good endings"
during the conference call that followed the announcement of his own contract
extension.
Manuel's status as the 17th manager in franchise history is underscored by
the contract as well as the reversal the Mets executed after he succeeded
Willie Randolph in the early hours of June 17. The team that had lost 35 of
69 games under Randolph won 55 of its final 93 games with the former White
Sox manager.
Clearly, the club weighed more heavily the overall reversal than the final 17
games of the season, during which the Mets squandered a 3 1/2-game lead in
the National League East. The second-place finish, the Mets' second in two
years, was the fifth for Manuel. His White Sox teams placed second in the
American League Central in 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2003, third in 2001 and first
in 2000.
Manuel being appointed as the permanent manager -- as permanent as any man
with that title -- was considered a foregone conclusion well before the Mets'
fall from first place, and it hardly appeared to be an issue after the fall.
Owner Fred Wilpon spoke quite favorably of Manuel Sunday, hours before the
loss to the Marlins that ended the Mets' season.
Randolph, who had no big league or Minor League experience as a manager,
signed a three-year, $1.875 million contract late in 2004. After the Mets
finished one victory short of the 2006 World Series, Randolph was given a
contract extension -- three years for $5.65 million -- though it took until
January 2007 for a deal to be struck.
Manuel, who turns 55 in December, had sought a three-year contract, according
to one person within the Mets' hierarchy. The club wanted to limit his
contract to two years. The option for a third season was the compromise. The
two years were said to put Manuel in position to earn $2 million, that person
said. But he was unsure if that total reflected Manuel's salary or his salary
plus a third-year buyout.
