[新聞] Mets acquire Pads’ Blanco for $1.5 mil
INDIANAPOLIS - — Add catching to the Padres’ need list.
The Padres suffered a loss just before the Winter Meetings started when
backup catcher Henry Blanco signed a free-agent contract with the New York
Mets.
Blanco will make $1.5 million — or twice what he did last year with the
Padres.
Blanco, 38, hit .235 with six homers and 16 RBI in 204 at-bats with the
Padres. But beyond catching 60 games, Blanco worked with starting catcher
Nick Hundley and the young Padres pitchers in addition to mentoring the club’
s younger Latin American players.
The Padres were 29-29 in the games Blanco started behind the plate.
The Padres had discussed re-signing Blanco, who became a free agent at the
end of the season.
Hundley, 26, started 71 games at catcher and hit .238 with eight homers and
30 RBI. He missed seven weeks with a small fracture in his left forearm.
The Padres organization is split on Hundley with some viewing him as a
potential front-line catcher while others see him more in a backup role. But
the Padres have little depth at catcher in their minor league system with
Luis Martinez, who hit .300 last season at high Single-A Lake Elsinore,
viewed as the prospect with the best catching skills.
Might the Padres now be seeking a catcher on the trade market? The Padres’
wish list already includes a right-handed hitting center fielder, a starting
pitcher and a backup infielder who would be a defensive asset at short and
second.
Aside from first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres who might draw the most
interest on the trade market are closer Heath Bell and third baseman Kevin
Kouzmanoff.
Both Bell and Kouzmanoff are arbitration eligible.
As the National League saves leader, Bell’s value would appear to be higher.
But the Reds (Francisco Cordero) and Pirates (Matt Capps) also are dangling
their closers here as trade bait and the free-agent list includes several
other late-inning relief candidates.
Meantime, a half-dozen teams are said to be looking for third basemen.
