[情報] Mets hire Terry Collins as new manager
The Mets have decided to hire Terry Collins as their next manager, according
to two sources with knowledge of the situation.
After a day of deliberation on Sunday, the team informed the three other
finalists-Chip Hale, Bob Melvin and Wally Backman-that they would not earn
the job, and began negotiating terms with Collins, who has earned his first
managing job since 1999. A news conference at Citi Field introducing Collins
is expected Monday.
Although the team had at one point discussed making Melvin the bench coach, a
source said Sunday that the Mets scout former Seattle and Arizona manager
will not serve in that role, although he might remain with the organization.
Hale, seen by many in the game as a strong managerial prospect, is expected
to remain on the major league staff. Backman managed Single-A Brooklyn last
year, and might be offered a promotion to a higher level of the minor
leagues. A source said that the Mets will consider former Met Mookie Wilson,
likely as first base coach.
Although sources have said since the end of the season that Dan Warthen is
likely to remain as pitching coach, his future is now less certain. Collins
has a strong relationship with former Mets pitching coach Dave Wallace from
their time together working in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, and a source
said Sunday that the Mets will consider Wallace.
Collins, 61, served last season as the team's minor league field coordinator.
He has previous major league managerial experience with two teams, the
Houston Astros (1994-1996) and Anaheim Angels (1997-1999). His lifetime
managerial record is 444-433.
Mets executive Paul DePodesta, as GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers, attempted to
hire Collins in 2005, but was himself fired. DePodesta retained his high
opinion of Collins, although people familiar with the interview process said
DePodesta was very much open to other candidates. Still, there was clearly
enough internal advocacy for Collins to make him the team's choice.
Although Collins was respected by most in the organization for his work as
field coordinator, his exit from Anaheim raised questions. During the 1999
season, some Angels players approached management and asked that Collins not
have his contract extended. Later in the year, Collins resigned. He briefly
addressed the situation after his second round interview Thursday in Orlando.
"I know that's a big issue, Collins said. "All you end up doing is digging a
bigger hole than needs to be dug. There's more to it, obviously, than anybody
is ever going to know. I'll tell you what: We played good."
Collins also said he felt compelled to address in his interview a 2002 DUI
arrest in Georgia. He did not, however, wish to discuss it publicly. "It's
over," Collins said. "It's in the past. It's something we all wish didn't
happen, but it did. I'm moving on."
Known for an intense personality, Collins has earned the respect of many
former colleagues, although some Mets minor leaguers who worked with him last
year provetely noted what they considered a difficult personality.
Asked about his demeanor on Thursday, Collins said, "You grow and patience
changes. But I believe in competition, too."
He assumes control of a team that has endured two consecutive losing seasons
under Jerry Manuel, and which followed two late-season collapses from playoff
contention under Manuel and Willie Randolph. With limited payroll flexibility
this year, his roster will not likely be significantly different from the one
that went 79-83 under Manuel last season.
