Guidry can impart firsthand knowledge to rookie Tuesday, August 14, 2007 from www.nj.com NEW YORK -- Ron Guidry believes Joba Chamberlain will go back to being a starting pitcher. But if he doesn't, Guidry is going to be jealous. "That's what I wanted to be -- a reliever," the Yankees' pitching coach said. "I had a great time starting, and I did the best job I could do. But deep down inside, I wished I'd been a relief pitcher." Chatting in the Yankees' dugout a few hours before last night's game, Guidry was answering questions about Chamberlain, the Yankee phenom who's getting his first taste of the major leagues in a relief role. Guidry himself broke in as a reliever, and to this day he still wishes he'd had the chance to remain one. "That's what I had done in the minor leagues, and it's what I wanted to do," Guidry said. "The only problem was, Sparky Lyle was here. And I couldn't very well take the job away from him. So I got stuck in the rotation." It's all about your perspective, of course, and "stuck in the rotation" is what Chamberlain hopes and expects to be. It's been only a few weeks since the Yankees converted him into a reliever because they determined that's the way he could best help them in this season's pennant push. Their plan, once this season is over, is to make him a starter again. But Guidry's story teaches us that the plan and the vision you have for your career when it's young can always take a detour. If Chamberlain takes to his current role, and if the Yankees decide they have a greater need for him in the bullpen, then he could, like Boston's Jonathan Papelbon, end up a relief pitcher even beyond this season. "He kind of reminds me of Goose (Gossage) a little bit," Guidry said, invoking the great closer of his own Yankee days. "You know he's going to throw hard. Hard fastball, hard slider, hard everything, and you're still going to have a hard time hitting it." High praise for a 21-year-old who's been in the majors for a week. Right now, Chamberlain's still trying to get used to a lot of things, including what it's like to sit in the bullpen all game not knowing if you're going to pitch. But last night, when he pitched a perfect eighth inning with a one-run lead in his first Yankee Stadium game with the fans chanting (and mispronouncing) his first name , was a rush. "It's a feeling like you can't describe," Chamberlain said. "You're put in tough situations a lot as a starter, but this was a little different kind of pressure. It's an adrenaline rush you don't get as a starter." The way Guidry sees it, if Chamberlain does have to be a reliever for a few years, he still could go back to starting without any problem. "You've got to have been a starter to be able to do it and revert back to it," Guidry said. "If you've got a guy who's only ever thrown 30, 40 pitches, it's tough to shoot him up to 100. But if you have a guy who's thrown 100 pitches in a game, you can stick him in the pen for years and he could still be a starter." Guidry began his minor-league career as a starter, but the Yankees feared he might be too small to hold up. So he spent a couple of years as a minor-league reliever before his promotion to the majors in 1975. He was used mainly as a reliever in '75 and '76, and the plan was to use him as a reliever in '77, too. But on April 29, two days after the Yankees had traded Dock Ellis for Mike Torrez, they needed a starting pitcher. Torrez was supposed to get the start, but he hadn't arrived yet. So the Yankees, knowing Guidry had been a starter before, asked him if he'd do it. Not only did he do it, he pitched 8 1/3 shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over Seattle. The Yankees had found something, and they weren't about to give it up. Guidry made 25 starts that season and finished 16-7. The following year, he made 35 starts (and no relief appearances), went 25-3 and won the Cy Young Award. But the itch never went away. In 1979, when Gossage got hurt and Guidry filled in as the closer for three games, he went into manager Billy Martin's office and told him he'd still like to be a relief pitcher. "He just looked at me and said, 'Fat chance,'" Guidry said. "After you win 25 games one year, they think you're crazy. Where are they going to get somebody to do that?" From 1977-85, working almost exclusively as a starting pitcher, Guidry won 154 games and lost 67. He was one of the best starting pitchers of his time and one of the best in Yankees history, always retaining the wistful belief that his laser-beam fastball and disappearing slider would have been even more effective one inning every couple of days than eight innings every five days. The lesson for Joba Chamberlain? You can break in as a reliever and still be a great starter. Even if you don't want to.
