Yankees 9, Tigers 3 Tigers' skid continues; Inge will sit Tuesday Tom Gage / The Detroit News www.detnews.com NEW YORK -- The Tigers continue to play like a team whose season will wind down unceremoniously. They are 10-21 since July 19. It's also been that long since they've won a series, but now they're facing the flip side of a demanding home-and-away stretch. Instead of visiting the Indians and Yankees, they'll be hosting them. Starting Tuesday night, the Tigers will be home for the next seven games against the same teams who just beat them in four of the last six. Joel Zumaya will be activated before the first pitch against the Indians. Manager Jim Leyland said that's definite. He also said Ryan Raburn will be at third base instead of Brandon Inge, who is struggling. He did not limit the Raburn-Inge switch to being a one-game move, either. "I'm going to give Inge a day off and play Raburn at third," Leyland said. "I don't know what's going to happen after that." This won't be the only opportunity for the Tigers to reverse the direction in which they are headed. It's still August, not September. But can you think of a better time? Probably not. They'll have to do more things right than they've done lately, certainly more than they did in Sunday's 9-3 loss at Yankee Stadium. Because of Cleveland's loss to Tampa Bay, though, the Tigers remained 1 1/2 games out of first. As they did against Roger Clemens, however, the Tigers let chances slip away against Chien-Ming Wang. "When you have a heck of a pitcher like Wang not having a heck of a day," Leyland said, "you have to do more than we did. "But we're leaving guys on. We're striking out way too much. We're taking some ugly swings. We're not taking advantage of our opportunities. That pretty much sums up the offense. "Those are just the facts. I won't sit here and sugarcoat it. The concentration of the at-bats just isn't acceptable if you plan on winning." This was a close game before the Yankees scored two runs in the seventh off Zach Miner and three more in the eighth off Aquilino Lopez. In fact, the Tigers led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth as Jeremy Bonderman again regrouped after giving up a run in the first. "It's wearing," Leyland said of Bonderman's problem of allowing first-inning runs, "but he gave us a shot to win. We just did a terrible job of adding on runs or getting a big hit. "This game is about playing good enough and doing enough things to win. Right now, our combination isn't good." Like Bobby Abreu's home run that grazed the foul pole being the turning point on Saturday, there was a pivotal moment in this game -- a through-the-legs error by Inge at third in the bottom of the fifth. "Tricky infield, tricky hop," Leyland said, with more than the one play to support the statement. There was an even worse hop on a hit past Carlos Guillen on Friday night. Down by a run, the Yankees got a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, followed by what looked like a double-play grounder off Alex Rodriguez's bat. The ball went right through Inge's legs, though, with the runners ending up at second and third. Hideki Matsui's sacrifice fly tied the score. Johnny Damon's home run in the sixth off Bonderman (10-6) put the Yankees back in front to stay. The loss for Bonderman was his fifth in his last six starts. He hasn't won since July 13. The worst of the Tigers' blown chances came in the fourth when they'd already scored a run, and had runners at second and third with one out, only to have the inning end on Inge's strikeout -- the second of three he had in the game -- and a ground ball to second by Cameron Maybin, who went 0-for-4 in his third game. Inge has struck out 25 times in his last 14 games, but said, "I feel great at the plate, but I'm getting pitched like I'm Babe Ruth. I haven't seen a ball in the middle of the plate in a week." However, Inge is far from the only reason the team is struggling offensively. "We came here and got a nice win the first night," Leyland said. "You have to win one more for sure. But, for whatever reason, we've done a very poor job of hitting with runners in scoring position." "That's the most frustrating thing," Inge said, "when you get chances but let them get away." A lot of chances have slipped away in the last month. So have a lot of games.
