Cashman prepares for playoff push Friday, August 24, 2007 BY JENNY VRENTAS Star-Ledger Staff The Yankees haven't changed their uniforms in more than half a century, but their Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder, put on a fashion show yesterday afternoon. General manager Brian Cashman even showed up in Trenton as four Thunder players modeled their new threads -- navy pinstripes for home, appropriately, with an animated cloud logo instead of the Thunder God. Cashman hadn't seen the new logo and uniforms until a few minutes before the catwalk of sorts, but promised Trenton GM Brad Taylor he'd take a trip to the gift shop. Admittedly, he was in good spirits the day after the Yankees salvaged the final game of their road series against the Angels. With six hours until he and his family were to take in that night's Thunder game, Cashman was willing to chat -- and, as it turned out, spout Yiddish sayings. What's your take on Joba Chamberlain's recent celebrity? You try to temper things, but I learned a long time ago, you cannot control who the hot commodity is going to be in terms of the media attention. ... I think Joba, Shelley (Duncan) and Phil (Hughes) probably have difficulty walking on the streets of Manhattan right now because of obviously their ability and what they represent for our future. But again, you get what you deserve, too. Does the success of players within the system make you feel vindicated? To be honest, I don't have time to ... feeling vindicated wouldn't be accurate. My job is to get this team to the playoffs and make sure we have playoff contending teams in the future. I know without a doubt the future is getting taken care of, and we have to get the present down, so my job is to do both. Right now, if the season ended today, I haven't done my job because my team wouldn't be in the playoffs. But we have thankfully a little over a month to go to prove that we're a playoff-worthy team. In this push for the playoffs, do you ever get any kind of break from baseball? No. The last few nights, we're out in Los Angeles on the West Coast, I'm staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning. At least today I'm a little happier. The last two days I was kind of depressed because we had let a game get away from us in the first game (of the series) and (Tuesday night) we got pounded, but last night Andy Pettitte came up big, and our offense did, too. But it's a roller coaster of emotions because you wish you could fast forward to the end to see what the outcome's going to be. What has been the hardest point of the season for you?Well, it will be all hard if we don't make the playoffs. The first half was really ... we had all those injuries, and we were underperforming, our five left-handed hitters in the lineup weren't hitting, our pitchers were all getting hurt. It was like a Stephen King horror novel. ... But again, right now, we have a chance to write a happy ending and change the story, if we accomplish what we need to accomplish. We'll see where it takes us. How much during that time did you talk to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner?Every day. Two, three times a day. Like I do now. He talks to me two, three times a day in good times and in bad. After the recent struggles of pitcher Mike Mussina, what do you foresee the starting pitching rotation as in two weeks?Just as it is. We've got the five starters we've got locked in, "Moose" has got Monday, and we'll see where he's at after that. Do you figure Joba will factor in to the playoff run? From your lips to God's ears.
