Johnny has come lately: Damon feeling just fine in NY
By Steve Buckley
Boston Herald General Sports Columnist
Johnny be good! Johnny Go!
(Coco Crisp)
Michael Vick

NEW YORK - Funny how there hasn’t been much talk this season about how the
Red Sox botched things by standing idly by as Johnny Damon made his escape to
New York.
A year ago, sure, there was a lot of outrage in Boston. Damon brought
hustle, spark and an esprit de corps to the Yankee clubhouse, while his
replacement in center field for the Red Sox, Coco Crisp, was either out of
the lineup or just out of place.
But with the Red Sox distancing themselves from the Yankees in the
American League East this season, and with Crisp making all those great
catches and showing flashes of the offensive shine that inspired the Sox to
acquire him in the first place, there has been little or no Damon talk. And,
anyway, Damon has been hurt a lot this season, and hasn’t hit much, and now
he is literally out in left field, having ceded center field to Melky Cabrera.
So when Boston’s one-time matinee idol powered the Yankees, on the
strength of a two-run homer off Daisuke Matsuzaka in the seventh inning, to a
5-3 victory over the Red Sox last night at the Stadium, one of the local
reporters put it to Damon that, gee, he sure seems a happier guy these days.
Damon paused for a beat, and then, sporting a healthy man’s smile,
said, “What are you saying, I was a miserable (expletive) before?”
Well, perhaps not that, but it’s clear that the amiable, laughing, ‘
Goodtime Johnny’ who was holding court in front of his locker late last
night is a new and improved model from earlier this season, back when those
aching legs were barking all the time.
Even Yankees manager Joe Torre has taken note of this, saying after the
game, “He’s had real good body language. Physically he feels much better.
And it’s really showing up, and he’s all in this thing. He’s pumped about
playing every day, and he will play most of the time, now with (Hideki)
Matsui nursing the knee, he’ll probably get more outfield time than he did
earlier.”
Red Sox fans who followed Damon during his Boston days know him as a
gamer, a guy who played hard even when his body was screaming for a respite.
This has not changed, other than the sobering reality that there have been
days and nights this season when he simply couldn’t will himself onto Uncle
Joe’s lineup card.
Under these circumstances, it’s hard to be the life of the party,
awkward to play the role of clubhouse leader. So you retreat a little, pull
back.
You become a miserable (expletive).
“You know, it’s awful when you know you can’t go out there and do
what everyone expects you to,” Damon said. “And who knows how long of a
break I needed, but hopefully everything happens for a reason, and coming
down the stretch I feel real good about our chances, regardless of how well
we do against the Red Sox these next two games.
“When I came into this league,” he said, “always there was the
feeling that I could chase down fly balls, and when you’re hurt the first
three or four months of the season, you start to worry. But Joe did a great
job resting me, getting my legs under me, and this is crunchtime.”
Damon probably will always be booed by Red Sox [team stats] fans, and
that’s their right. Their one-time hero had the temerity to leave Boston in
order to take up residence in the Bronx, apparently an unpardonable sin. It's
as though Michael Vick has a better chance of getting warmly received in
Boston than Johnny Damon.
Damon can deal with it, because, as he said last night, “I have found a
home in New York.”
But sometimes people come home miserable. Such was the case with Damon
on too many nights earlier this season.
Now he is hitting - in 15 starts in left field he has hit .435 - and the
body language says it all.
He is miserable no more.
