Yankees Can Add Clemens’s Elbow to Recent Woes By TYLER KEPNER Published: September 4, By TYLER KEPNER Published: September 4, 2007 Nolan Ryan is the only man in history with more strikeouts than Roger Clemens, another tall Texan who built himself in Ryan’s image. Ryan was 46 when he threw his last pitch, against the Seattle Mariners. A torn elbow ligament ended a career of remarkable durability. Clemens is 45, and his immediate future is uncertain after elbow problems forced him out of the Yankees’ 7-1 loss to the Mariners yesterday in the Bronx. Clemens left Yankee Stadium to have a magnetic resonance imaging test. Manager Joe Torre said he expected Clemens to miss his next start, and it also seemed doubtful that Clemens would return for next week’s series in Boston. “We’ll have to wait and see what the tests show,” Torre said. “But for safety’s sake, you’d probably skip him one time, anyway. Hopefully, that’s all it is.” The Yankees managed only five hits and a run over seven innings against Felix Hernandez, who helped the Mariners snap a nine-game losing streak and cut the Yankees’ lead in the American League wild-card race to one game. Clemens lasted four innings, allowing five runs and eight hits. Mike Mussina followed with the first regular-season relief appearance of his career — he also replaced Clemens in Game 7 of the 2003 A.L. Championship Series — and he will take Clemens’s turn in the rotation. The Yankees have lost three of four games since sweeping Boston at home last week. “We knew we weren’t going to play .700 ball from the middle of July until the end of the season; you’ve got to be realistic,” said Mussina, who gave up two runs and seven hits in three and two-thirds innings. “But we fought our way back, we’re leading the wild card now, and we want to stay after it. The last four days, especially, we haven’t played very well. We’ve been a little flat, it seems like. We’ve got to get our heads on right and play with some energy and some enthusiasm.” Losing Clemens is a significant blow to a wobbly rotation. Besides Chien-Ming Wang and Andy Pettitte, who are a combined 15-4 in the second half, the rotation now includes the struggling Mussina and the rookies Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy. Clemens beat the Red Sox with six strong innings Wednesday, but his elbow became a serious issue during and after that game. Clemens received treatment but decided against having a cortisone shot. Torre said the pitching coach Ron Guidry checked with Clemens yesterday to make sure he was healthy, and Clemens decided to pitch. “Roger certainly knows his body better than anybody else,” Torre said. “ And just from my experience, I don’t think there’s a pitcher who’s been around who doesn’t take some kind of baggage with him to the mound, a guy that’s been around a long time. So I have to really trust him that what he has to deal with is not uncharted waters.” The Clemens situation is similar to the handling of Mariano Rivera’s elbow problem last season. The Yankees knew that Rivera’s elbow was bothering him last Aug. 30 but did not immediately shut him down. Rivera pitched against Detroit that day, had an M.R.I. test the next afternoon and pitched that night, too. Only after that game was Rivera shut down for three weeks with a muscle strain. Yesterday, the Yankees were concerned enough about Clemens to have Mussina ready as an emergency starter. But instead of sending Clemens to a doctor and ordering him to rest, they deferred to Clemens’s wishes and let him pitch. “It’s not something that’s unusual,” Torre said. “The first three innings, it was a manageable situation for him. Then in the fourth inning, he said it started grabbing on him.” Clemens’s velocity was not noticeably different; he hit 90 and 91 miles an hour a few times. Whatever discomfort Clemens felt, he did not share it with catcher Jorge Posada. “No limitations at all,” said Posada, who added, “He didn’t talk one thing about his elbow.” Posada said Clemens’s elbow had not been an issue except yesterday and in the Boston game. The start before that, in Detroit, Clemens struggled with blisters on his right foot. Torre said Sunday that the foot concerned him more and stressed that the elbow problem was not alarming. “Let me tell you something: It’s happened earlier this year, too, the same type of thing, where he’s dealt with it and came back and pitched gems,” Torre said. “I’m sure last year in Houston — and my guess is, before he left here — it’s something that comes and goes. It doesn’t mean it’s debilitating. It’s muscular stuff. If the concern was there for everybody, there would have been an M.R.I. before this.” Now the concern is there, officially, and the Yankees can only hope that the M.R.I. test does not sentence Clemens to the same inglorious end as Nolan Ryan. INSIDE PITCH Ichiro Suzuki surpassed the 200-hit mark for the seventh season in a row. Only Willie Keeler and Wade Boggs have longer streaks.
