Manager Terry Francona is trying to guide the Red Sox past the Indians in the
American League Championship Series. But Francona was concerned enough about
Joe Torre’s unresolved employment status with the Yankees that he called him.
“I have not spoken to him,” Francona said. “I left a message for him and,
understandably, his phone was off. I don’t blame him.”

First, David Ortiz strongly supports Torre during a dugout interview with six
reporters (only one from New York) on Thursday. Now Francona admits that he
has checked in on Torre. It appears as if the passion that exists in the
Yankees-Red Sox rivalry includes some compassion, too.
