Santana Deal Is Still Alive as Yankees Keep Pettitte

Laura
Jon Lester。
NASHVILLE, Dec. 3 — The Yankees’ pursuit of Johan Santana showed a flicker
of life early Tuesday morning when the Minnesota Twins backed off their
demand that the right-hander Ian Kennedy be added to the Yankees’ trade
offer.
But with the Yankees’ midnight deadline for a deal come and gone, the teams
had still not reached an agreement on the third player to be added to the
package of Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera. If the sides cannot agree by
Tuesday morning, the Yankees say they will back out of trade talks.
“If things don’t change drastically, it’ll probably be no,” the senior
vice president Hank Steinbrenner said.
The Yankees did land one veteran left-handed starter for the top of their
rotation on the first day of the winter meetings. Andy Pettitte informed the
team that he will return in 2008, a move that bolsters a young rotation.
It would stand to reason that the Yankees could still add Santana, despite
their deadline, if either side changes course. But Steinbrenner said he would
not be disappointed to keep Hughes and Cabrera.
“I’d be happy either way,” he said. “The young pitching is just going to
take a little longer, as they do when they’re 21 or 22 years old. Santana
didn’t really hit his stride until he was 24. But I think our guys are ready
to do something this year. They’re certainly going to be — all of them —
top-notch pitchers.
“And that’s the way you’ve got to do it with pitchers. You’ve got to grow
your own. You can buy position players, but you’ve got to grow your own
pitching, because nobody’s going to give it to you.”
Certainly not the Twins, an organization that held onto center fielder Torii
Hunter last season even though Hunter was a potential free agent unlikely to
return. Minnesota seems prepared to keep Santana and closer Joe Nathan to
make another run at an A.L. Central title.
“I’m thinking they’re going to keep us,” said Nathan, who lives in
Knoxville, Tenn., and met with the Twins on Monday. “They’re just trying to
improve our team to get it as good as it can be for the ‘08 season,
hopefully. Right now, I’m just going to assume that our team is going to
have myself on it and have Johan on it. I’m sure Johan is thinking the same
thing.”
In Pettitte, at least, the Yankees retain a pitcher who worked a team-high
215 1/3 innings last season. The team did not announce the deal, but Pettitte
has a standing offer for one year and $16 million, and his agent, Randy
Hendricks, confirmed his client’s intention in an e-mail message on Monday.
“Calls and requests for him to return from Brian Cashman, Derek Jeter, Jorge
Posada, Joe Girardi, among others, influenced him, as did an outpouring of
requests from Yankees fans,” Hendricks said, after the news was first
reported by the Houston Chronicle.
“Laura gave her support and blessing. As to why now, he felt he should
commit now so the Yankees would know they would have him as they formulated
their team for 2008.”
Posada, the Yankees’ catcher, said last week that in his conversations with
Pettitte, he got the impression that Pettitte was leaning toward retirement.
Pettitte and his wife, Laura, have four children and live near Houston.
But Pettitte showed last season that he could still succeed in the American
League after three seasons in the National League with the Astros. He went
15-9 with a 4.05 earned run average and added an excellent start in the
division series against Cleveland.
More important, perhaps, was the condition of his elbow. Pettitte mentioned
several times last season that he was surprised at how strong his elbow felt
all through the year, even though it had given him trouble almost every
season since 1996.
Pettitte’s return eases the burden on the rookies Joba Chamberlain, Hughes
and Kennedy, who are expected to be part of the rotation. The Yankees have
two other veteran starters, Chien-Ming Wang and Mike Mussina, plus holdover
Kei Igawa.
Cashman, the general manager, would not discuss Pettitte or Santana. But
Steinbrenner said on Sunday that he believed the Twins were using the Yankees
’ offer to get more from the Boston Red Sox, who will not trade Jacoby
Ellsbury and Jon Lester in the same deal.
The Yankees’ sense on Monday was that the Red Sox were not serious about
acquiring Santana for themselves, offering just enough to force the Yankees
to give more but not enough to truly appeal to the Twins.
The Yankees made one move official on Monday, finalizing their two-year, $4
million contract with backup catcher Jose Molina and designating infielder
Andy Phillips for assignment. Cashman said the team had “full focus” on
pitching depth and had little interest in the free-agent market.
Cashman said Kyle Farnsworth would take over for Chamberlain as the Yankees’
eighth-inning setup man, and the depth of the Yankees’ farm system would
help in potential deals.
“We’re certainly proud of the work we’ve done, because right now I can sit
at the table with any team in baseball and have a conversation,” Cashman
said. “Two years ago, that wasn’t possible.”
INSIDE PITCH
The Yankees acquired Jonathan Albaladejo, a right-handed reliever, from the
Nationals late Monday night for Tyler Clippard. Albaladejo, 25, worked in 14
games last September with a 1.88 earned run average. Clippard was 3-1 with a
6.33 E.R.A. in six starts for the Yankees. The deal is contingent on the
players passing physicals.
