Yankees sign infielders Morgan Ensberg and Chris Woodward to Minor League
contracts; Invite infielder Eduardo Nunez to spring camp
The New York Yankees announced today that they have signed infielders Morgan
Ensberg and Chris Woodward to minor league contracts and invited them to
Major League spring training. The Yankees also invited infielder Eduardo
Nunez to spring training, bringing the total number of players scheduled to
report to 69.
Ensberg, 32, split the 2007 season between the Houston Astros and San Diego
Padres, combining to hit .230 (65-for-282) with 13 doubles, 12 home runs and
39 RBI in 115 games. He began the season with the Astros before being traded
to the Padres with cash considerations on July 31 in exchange for a player to
be named later or cash considerations.
In 703 career Major League games Houston and San Diego, Ensberg owns a .265
(564-for-2130) batting average with 102 doubles, 109 home runs and 343 RBI.
He helped lead the Astros to the National League pennant in 2005, setting
franchise records for most home runs (36) and RBI (101) by an Astros third
baseman and earning team MVP honors from the Houston chapter of the BBWAA.
Ensberg was originally selected by Houston in the ninth round of the 1998
First-Year Player Draft.
Woodward, 31, played in 92 games with the Atlanta Braves in 2007, making
appearances at first base (six games), second base (11 games), third base (24
games) and shortstop (13 games). He batted .199 (27-for-136) with six
doubles, one home run and eight RBI and was 5-for-39 (.128) as a
pinch-hitter.
A 54th round selection by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1994 First-Year Player
Draft, Woodward owns a .243 (388-for-1598) career batting average in 607
Major League games with the Blue Jays, New York Mets and Braves. He has
played at least one game at every position except pitcher and catcher,
combining for a .968 career fielding percentage.
Nunez, 19, batted .238 (78-for-328) with 10 doubles, two triples, one home
run, 28 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 91 games with Single-A Charleston in 2007.
He was the starting shortstop for the South Division in the South Atlantic
League's Midseason All-Star Game. Nunez was signed by the Yankees as a
non-drafted free agent on February 25, 2004.
