[新聞] Yanks plan to pursue Big-name pitchers
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Yankees brass finished two days of meetings yesterday
in Tampa and charted a plan of attack that isn't a surprise to anybody who has
been paying attention.
With major holes in their rotation, they are going to be in on the bidding
for free agent pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, they have an interest
in Ben Sheets and Derek Lowe and might entertain a trade for Jake Peavy.
Because of a vacancy at first base, where it doesn't appear Jason Giambi will
be asked back, the Yankees likely will listen to what kind of deal
switch-hitting free agent Mark Teixeira will be looking to sign.
According to a person with knowledge of the Yankees' thinking, no concrete
decisions were reached during the two days, but reports were examined and
names discussed.
Unlike his predecessor, Joe Torre, manager Joe Girardi was involved in the
meetings, attending both days.
The Yankees are aware of Andy Pettitte's desire to return, but aren't sure
they want to go more than one year with the left-hander.
At the end of the month, the Yankees expect to hear Mike Mussina will retire
after recording his first 20-win season.
The Yankees believe they can fill their rotation holes through free agency,
but Sabathia, the top arm on the market, has told people in Milwaukee that he
isn't wild about playing in New York. His top preference is the Dodgers, but
they may not have the $140 million it likely will take to land him.
The Bronx fits into Burnett's wish to remain close to his Maryland roots.
Sheets, whose injury history has raised red flags, has above-average stuff
and a live arm when healthy. Lowe, who is looking for a three-year deal,
would prefer to stay with the Dodgers. It's not known if the Yankees have
what the Padres are going to want for Peavy.
Teixeira certainly would be an upgrade at first, but the early word is that
agent Scott Boras is looking for a 10-year deal in the $200 million range.
So, the most intriguing news to come out of the organizational meetings was
Hank Steinbrenner saying everybody was in agreement that Joba Chamberlain
would start 2009 in the rotation.
其它消息:
With the Dodgers eliminated from the postseason, the Yankees are waiting to
hear if Larry Bowa is willing to return as their third base coach. Bowa
finished the first year of a two-year deal with the Dodgers but has an out.
If Bowa remains with Joe Torre, the Yankees may turn to Mike Gallego, a
former Yanks infielder, who parted ways with the Rockies this year.

Chien-Ming Wang threw 20 pitches off a half-mound yesterday and 25 off a full
mound in Tampa. Wang missed the second half of last year with a sprained
foot. . . . The Yankees have not renewed the contract of Triple A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre coach Alvaro Espinoza.
