BALTIMORE - The Yankees have been preparing to play without Alex Rodriguez,
who is expected to miss a day or two in the next week in order to be with his
wife as they welcome their second daughter into the world.
But the Bombers might be without the services of the AL MVP for longer than
they anticipated, as Rodriguez strained his right quad in Sunday's 7-1
victory over the Orioles.
"It's a little sore, a little tight," Rodriguez said. "Of course I'm
concerned. Any time you have any type of ill feeling, you've got some
concern."
The injury - the latest malady to beset the Bombers during the season's first
three weeks - put a damper on a winning day for the Yankees.
Andy Pettitte took a perfect game into the fifth inning, providing some rest
for the staff with seven shutout innings, to help snap the team's three-game
losing streak. Derek Jeter doubled twice and drove in three runs, and Johnny
Damon belted a two-run homer to give the Yankees some breathing room.
After the game, A-Rod's injury was the focal point.
"That's a big blow," Pettitte said. "I have no idea, but you come out with a
strained quad, I'd say he's going to be out for a few days. We just have to
pick up the slack."
"Hopefully Rod will be just a couple of days," Jason Giambi said. "Who knows,
he's Superman, anyway. He might wake up (today) and feel great."
Following a spring in which Girardi stressed health and conditioning, the
Yankees have had five separate muscle injuries. Rodriguez joined Jeter
(quad), Giambi (groin), Jose Molina (hamstring) and Jorge Posada (shoulder)
on that list.
Jeter missed six games with a similar injury on April 7, but the Yankees
would only say Rodriguez was day-to-day.
"You never know if it's different. We'll just have to wait until (tomorrow),"
Joe Girardi said. "I'm not too concerned."
"I haven't had an injury like this in a long time," said Rodriguez, who last
battled this type of injury in high school. "I'm hoping (to miss) no time;
that would be ideal in a perfect world. Let's see how I wake up (today), and
hopefully I can strap it on (tomorrow)."
A-Rod didn't accompany the team to Chicago last night, heading back to New
York for the off day instead. His leg was wrapped with a heat pack as he left
the ballpark, and he said he would receive further treatment today.
Rodriguez has played at least 154 games in each of the past seven seasons,
and he has not been on the disabled list since 2000, when he missed 14 games
with a knee strain.
Rodriguez gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead Sunday with an RBI double off Steve
Trachsel in the fourth inning. His next at-bat came in the sixth, when he
grounded into a fielder's choice. He felt something in his leg when he swung,
and it got worse as he ran down the line.
First-base coach Tony Pena noticed A-Rod moving gingerly, and after the first
pitch to Hideki Matsui, Pena signaled for Girardi and assistant trainer Steve
Donahue to look at Rodriguez.
"I felt it a little bit in my swing and follow-through, then probably four or
five steps out of the box I felt a little twinge," Rodriguez said.
Said Girardi: "Originally he thought it was a cramp, but he'll wake up
(today) and see how he feels."
Despite the seven-run outburst Sunday, the Yankees have struggled to generate
runs, especially with runners in scoring position. Morgan Ensberg likely
would replace A-Rod at third.
"We'll just have to get it done," Giambi said. "That's the way we've done it
in the past. If he needs time to heal, he's the best player in the game, so
I'd rather him be completely healthy and doing the damage he can do than play
semi-hurt this early in the year."
Rodriguez is one of only two players in the American League to start each of
his team's games, joining Texas' Josh Hamilton. A-Rod is hitting .308 with
four homers and 10 RBI.
"We'll see how he is (Tuesday). If he's okay, it's great. If he's not, we'll
find a way," Girardi said. "I don't worry about it. You wake up every day and
you try to find a way to win a game."
