Rainout gives Yankees chance to reassess pitching plans

DETROIT - The Yankees had their game against the Detroit Tigers postponed due
to rain yesterday, which opened the door for a variety of options - including
the possibility of skipping Kei Igawa's next start.
The first few decisions were easy. Yesterday's scheduled starter, Andy
Pettitte, will face the Tampa Bay Rays tonight in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Chien-Ming Wang was pushed back until tomorrow night, and Mike Mussina now
will pitch on Wednesday.
However, the Yankees did not announce a starter for Thursday's game or the
opener of the Subway Series against the Mets at Yankee Stadium on Friday
night.
Right-hander Darrell Rasner will pitch one of those games, likely on Friday.
He is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA since being called up on May 4. He held the Tigers
to two runs on four hits in six innings in Saturday's 5-2 victory.
Igawa had been scheduled to face the Rays on Wednesday despite a horrific
outing on Friday against the Tigers that saw him allow six runs on 11 hits in
three innings. Igawa then said afterward that the result was "just a part of
baseball."
That comment raised a few eyebrows in the Yankees' clubhouse.
The rainout gives the Yankees a few days to ponder whether Igawa should get
another chance or be shipped back to Triple-A Scranton to work on his
assorted issues.
"He knows what's expected of him," manager Joe Girardi said.
Ian Kennedy would have been an option to pitch on Friday. But his start for
Triple-A Scranton yesterday in Indianapolis was postponed. Kennedy now is
scheduled to pitch this afternoon.
If Kennedy pitches only a few innings today, he could be brought back on
Friday. But the Yankees would prefer to see some consistency over a period of
time before bringing him back to the majors.
"You'd feel a lot better if he had a couple of good starts in the minors,"
Girardi said.
Kennedy was 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA for the Yankees before he was demoted to
Scranton. He pitched well in his first start in the minors, allowing one hit
over 7 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out eight without a walk.
There are several other possibilities. Triple-A right-hander Dan Giese is 2-2
with a 1.13 ERA. He began the season as a reliever but was moved into the
rotation on April 19 and has allowed four earned runs over 34 1/3 innings
since. Giese pitched seven innings on Saturday.
Double-A Trenton left-hander Chase Wright is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA and last
pitched on Friday. He appeared in three games for the Yankees last season.
Trenton right-hander Dan McCutchen, one of the organization's top prospects,
is 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA. He had been scheduled to pitch yesterday, but that
game also was rained out.
"There's a lot of things we have to talk about," said Girardi, who will go
over the situation with general manager Brian Cashman and pitching coach Dave
Eiland.
There was little chance to play yesterday. With heavy rain in the forecast,
the game was called only a few minutes after it was scheduled to start.
No makeup date has been determined, although July 24 and Sept. 1 have been
targeted as the likely choices.
Under the rules of the collective bargaining agreement with the Major League
Baseball Player Association, the players would have to approve July 24, since
that would necessitate the Yankees playing for 27 consecutive days.
Team representative Mike Mussina said playing on Sept. 1 would be agreeable
if it were a day game.
Major League Baseball, the two clubs involved and the MLBPA work together to
find a date agreeable to all parties.
"It'll work itself out," Mussina said.
