1. The Yankees talk it over - for a long time
For at least the fourth time already this season, the Yankees held a team
meeting after a bad loss.
This one was was a doozy as Joe Girardi didn’t emerge from the clubhouse
until 34 minutes after the game. He even threw the clubbies and security
people out before his talk.
The first three meetings didn’t change much, time will tell whether this
one does. Girardi was very emotional afterward but didn’t say anything
specific about what he wants to see changed.
The Yankees have reacted well to steady, no-panic leadership in the past.
Whether this approach works remains to be seen. You can sometimes scare a
young team into winning. Old teams have heard it all before.
More on the meeting - including Girardi’s postgame press conference -
later on.

2. Meetings can only go so far
The Yankees have held two team meetings over the last 10 days after bad
losses. This one was loud, players said. Joe Girardi is never profane and
wasn’t this time. But he and his coaches were forceful.
There’s a problem with meetings, however. What happens if you lose the
next day?
At some point a manager has to find a way to reach all 25 guys. The
Yankees may not be a championship team this season. They are too beat up
for that and the rotation is too thin. But also shouldn’t be a team on
pace to score 200 fewer runs than last season. That speaks to giving a damn.
The Yankees have been held to two or fewer runs 28 times this season.
That’s one third of the time. Jon Lester needed 105 pitches to throw
a shutout. He’s good, but he’s not that good. The Yankees played like
they had a cab to catch. Or Madonna’s limo.
“The Steinbrenners spent $200 million on us and we haven’t showed what
we’re made of,” said Johnny Damon, one of the players who also spoke
during the meeting. “I know this is one game and I know we have 75 or
so games left. But we’ve got to do something soon.”
Meanwhile the Yankees face Josh Beckett tomorrow and send Darrell Rasner
against the Red Sox for the first time in his career.
Here’s Joe Girardi’s postgame interview session:
Thanks for reading today and check back tomorrow for a full day of
holiday blogging.

Girardi Tears Into Slumbering Yankees
By Tyler Kepner
The rest of the season will show what effect, if any, Joe Girardi’s
heated team meeting has on the Yankees. Girardi tries to project a calm
exterior, rarely admitting to any kind of shortcoming by his team or
players. But there is a toughness to Girardi, and he showed the team
his ornery side in a half-hour meeting after Thursday’s 7-0 loss.
Girardi challenged the team to play with more passion, adhere to his rules
and eliminate mental mistakes, like missing signs. If the players care
enough, they will respond. If not, it could be a sign they are tuning
out the new manager.
Maybe there was no way to beat Jon Lester on Thursday. He’s pitching
like an All-Star. But it’s hard to believe that the Yankees made him
throw only 104 pitches, and hard to believe they did not advance a runner
on the bases after the first inning.
Johnny Damon, who spoke passionately in the meeting, said what a lot of
Yankees fans must have been thinking.
“There’s millions of people who would love to put on a major league
uniform, and I’m sure a great amount of them would love to put on the
pinstripes,” Damon said. “We’re lucky. We’re damn lucky to put on
the pinstripes, and we need to definitely set a better example of what
wearing the pinstripes means.”

Girardi hold postgame meeting
by Ed Price
Thursday July 03, 2008, 11:42 PM
After a 7-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, manager Joe Girardi spoke to the
Yankees for about 30 minutes.
"He got some stuff off his chest (and said,) 'Come tomorrow ready to play,'
" said a person who was in the room and spoke on the condition of anonymity
because the meeting was held behind closed doors. "It wasn't a bad meeting
at all. He wasn't screaming and yelling."
The message, the person said, was, "We've got to be more consistent. We've
got to play harder. We've got to fight for nine innings."
Johnny Damon said "it just seemed like there was nothing there" once the
Yankees got down 4-0 after two innings.
"When we put the pinstripes on, there's a lot of pride that goes with
it," he said. "There's 55,000 fans out there. There's many media outlets
that are going to talk about, 'How come the Yankees aren't scoring?' And
it's embarrassing.
"We didn't look like we a chance, and we should have a chance every day
we step out on the field. ... They went out and they handed it to us and
they made it look easy."
