The Yankees wanted Gardner to play every day in the minors, so they kept Justin Christian as a fifth outfielder and pinch runner. Hawkins was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 33 appearances after signing a one-year, $3.75 million contract as a free agent. "LaTroy Hawkins is a quality guy," manager Joe Girardi said. "I think he's played an important role in the maturation of our young pitchers (in the bullpen). ... It's a tough call for us. It's not easy to do." With Nady expected to play regularly in left field, Damon becomes the Yankees' primary DH. "I love it, being a DH," he said. "I could do it another 10 years. It's great having the number of outfielders we have. Bobby (Abreu) loves playing the field.
