[新聞] Rivera passes 1,000 career innings

Rivera passes 1,000 career innings
Yankees closer's 2.31 ERA is among the top 20 in lifetime ERA
ARLINGTON -- Mariano Rivera retired Jay Payton of the Orioles on July 29
under typical circumstances. But the Yankees closer made a quiet claim to
history.
With the out, Rivera hit 1,000 innings pitched for his career, a relatively
rare milestone for relievers. And Rivera, as he's apt to do, made a claim to
something ever rarer.
Among those Major Leaguers with at least 1,000 innings pitched, Rivera is the
first in 80 years to rank among the top 20 in lifetime ERA. His 2.31 mark is
good for 18th all time, and is tops among those who spent the majority of
their careers as relievers.
Rivera considered the feat before Tuesday's game and his eyes grew wide.
"I did that?" he asked.
He was told he did.
"I didn't even know," he said.
Yet the gravity of the feat was not lost on Rivera. Calling him one of the
greatest pitchers of his era is a given, and dubbing him one of the finest
relievers of all-time goes without question. And with 1,000 innings now to
his credit, Rivera's stat sheet certainly does stack up curiously to those
from different generations.
In comparing Rivera to those pitchers, there are two things to consider. One
is the fact that every higher-ranking pitcher on the ERA leader board was a
starter, making it more difficult to maintain such a level of success.
Playing at a time when complete games were the norm, men such as Ed Walsh and
Addie Joss and Walter Johnson endured far heavier workloads than Rivera, who
rarely throws more than an inning per game.
Yet in contrast, most of those baseball legends pitched in the dead ball era,
when offensive statistics were drastically dampened. Rivera pitched in the
1990s and 2000s, when home runs flew out of ballparks at record rates.
And he did most of it with just one pitch.
"It's hard to put into words, but that's what makes him special," former
Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Although, he has modified that pitch over
the years. He has added variations of it, changing his grip and making it
move differently to left-handers than right-handers. But it's all fastballs.
And he's a skinny kid who's lasted this long. He's wiry. But the ball jumps
out of his hand."
Rivera will never challenge Walsh, the all-time ERA leader with a 1.82 mark.
But he will likely retire as the leader among relievers, a feat that
underscores his unparalleled success.
Not that Rivera is concerned with statistics.
"I'm not about that," Rivera said. "I'm about players that want to win, and
want to help the team as much as possible. When things come like that, I just
let it happen."
