Girardi sat behind a sparse desk and dumped the blame for this nightmarish YankeesNew York Yankees season on his chest. "I take responsibility for it, that's the only way I know how to do it," Girardi said of the extremely disappointing season that is very likely to end on Sept. 28 and would leave the Yankees out of the postseason for the first time since 1993. "Obviously, my job is to get the most out of everyone." Based on the Yankees' lofty goals of World Series or bust, it looks like Girardi will fail to deliver what the Steinbrenner family hired him to do. "If we don't win a World Series, I don't consider it a successful year," Girardi said of the fourth-place Yankees, who start tonight 11 games behind the AL East leading Rays and 8½ lengths back of the Red Sox in the wild card race with 16 games remaining. In recent weeks, Hank Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman have supported Girardi, who has two more years remaining on a contract but will land on the coals if the Yankees get off to a dismal start next season. Girardi, 43, admits he learned plenty, and there have been mistakes along the way. Not telling Johnny DamonJohnny Damon the night before he wasn't going to play and then having Damon learn it when he looked at the lineup card before an Aug. 11 game in Minnesota was wrong. So, too, was criticizing Damon for saying he was puzzled by not knowing. Reaction to Girardi's job in the clubhouse is mixed. Andy Pettitte , Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Mike Mussina and Brian Bruney praised Girardi. Others said a lot by not moving their lips when asked. Two refused to comment and said, "Don't write that I didn't say anything." Mussina, who is a Joe Torre fan, debunked the thought that the season would have been different had the Steinbrenners given Torre a two-year deal to stay instead of the one- year pact he refused. "If Joe Torre was still here it would have been just as hard," Mussina said. When teams are out of contention it's easy to assume they have quit. Scouts and opponents say they haven't seen that. Is that saying players haven't given away at-bats? No. Have some players quit on themselves? Seemingly, yes. The lackluster play could be the product of an older lineup out of gas because it had to play every day for almost a month if the Yan kees had a chance to get back in the race. Talk to Girardi before a game and he is relaxed. Get him after a loss and the toll it takes on him is clear to see. "Some days I take it home more than others," Girardi said. "I have a wonderful family that I go home to. The kids care a little bit about whether we won or lost, but they get over that quicker than I do." Girardi has the support of Cashman. "Joe has done a good job, he had to deal with a lot," Cashman said of the Yankees losing Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui and Chien-Ming Wang for extended stretches. "He never used excuses and has always looked to solve the problem.
