[新聞] 3-year deal with Yankees tops Bobby Abreu's wish list

Bobby Abreu loves New York. In the coming weeks, that love will be put to the
test.
The outfielder will have to decide on his baseball future in the next month
or two, as he hits the free agent market for the first time in his 12-year
career.
Abreu has said several times that he would like to remain with the Yankees,
having enjoyed his 2-1/2-year stint in pinstripes. But the 34-year-old also
is seeking at least a three year-contract, leading most baseball insiders to
believe the outfielder will wind up in a new uniform this winter.
According to a source, Abreu has been upset by some recent media reports and
speculation suggesting that his days in the Bronx are over. Abreu is
vacationing with his family in the Bahamas and is expected to return to the
area this weekend, although his situation won't be settled until next month
at the earliest, as he figures to test the free agent market
GM Brian Cashman said he has not discussed any contract issues with Abreu or
his representatives, so he wasn't in a position to say how many years Abreu
is seeking. But Cashman, who pulled the 2006 deadline deal to acquire Abreu
from the Phillies along with pitcher Cory Lidle, stressed that he is "a big
fan" of the outfielder. "I thought he was a welcome addition," Cashman said.
"He solidified right field, was an offensive force and has been a steady
performer. He's a professional, and his demeanor is outstanding. He's done a
great job."
Abreu hit .296 with 20 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 runs scored and 22 stolen
bases this season, posting a .371 on-base percentage and a respectable .296
average with runners in scoring position. He joined Alex Rodriguez and Albert
Pujols as the only players in the majors to drive in 100 or more runs in each
of the last six seasons.
A major league scout said that Abreu has "two or three years left in him,"
but some decline should be expected as he turns 35 in March. Abreu just
completed a six-year, $76 million deal that included last year's $16 million
option. Abreu signed that deal with the Phillies in 2002, and this will be
his first foray into the free agent market.
Cashman and the rest of the Yankees' hierarchy will hold their organizational
meetings in Tampa in the next couple of weeks, where they will decide on a
plan for this offseason. Should the Bombers let Abreu walk, replacing his
production won't be easy.
Peter Greenberg, Abreu's agent, was traveling Friday and could not be reached
for comment.
Abreu told the Daily News last month that he would like to stay with the
Yankees, but he made it clear that a multiyear deal is a priority. Asked
which was more important to him, staying in the Bronx or getting a three- or
four-year deal, Abreu smiled before answering.
"Both would be great," Abreu said in mid-September. "I want to stay here, but
I want some security, too. I'm healthy, I'm still young, so I think I can
still get something like that. ... This is my last (contract) for some years,
so I'm not looking for one year or anything like that."
The Yankees figure to leave Johnny Damon in left field, move Xavier Nady to
right and look for an answer in center, where Brett Gardner is currently tops
on the depth chart. Should the Yankees re-sign Abreu, they could move Damon
to center for 2009, the final year of his four-year, $52 million contract.
