While the Red Sox and Rays are preparing for the ALCS, Thursday the Yankees
will be looking ahead to 2009.
Will CC Sabathia be fitted for pinstripes? How about Mark Teixeira? Will
Robinson Cano be sent packing?
These are some of the questions the Yankees will discuss in Tampa, as the
front office gathers at Steinbrenner Field for its annual organizational
meetings. Among those to attend are co-chairmen Hank and Hal Steinbrenner,
president Randy Levine, COO Lonn Trost and GM Brian Cashman.
"It's to set our offseason priorities, certainly, and what we need to try and
do," Hank Steinbrenner told the Associated Press Wednesday. "This year, we
definitely are all pretty much on the same page. We know what we have to do,
and it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of effort. Hopefully we can
get as much done as we hope."
The Yankees must address a troubled starting rotation, with Sabathia likely
topping their wish list. Other free agent pitchers include A.J. Burnett, Ben
Sheets, Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.
San Diego's Jake Peavy might also be available in a trade, although the
Yankees would likely have to deal Cano with prospects for the talented
27-year-old righthander. The Yankees will also have to address first base and
center field, although the free agent market is thin at first beyond Teixeira
and virtually nonexistent in center field.
The Yankees must also decide what to do with Joba Chamberlain next season,
especially after he failed to reach his innings limit in 2008. Cashman has
said recently that Chamberlain will be a starter, but it's unlikely that the
Yankees would allow him to throw 200 innings.
