Yanks decline arbitration to Abreu, others
December 1, 2008
The Yankees decided not to offer arbitration to any of their eight free
agents, which didn’t come as much of a surprise in seven of those cases.
But in the case of Bobby Abreu, it makes very little sense.
Unless the economy is going to have much more of an impact on free-agent
signings than I think it does, there is virtually no chance that Abreu
would have accepted arbitration, even though it would have guaranteed
him about $16-17 million for 2009. Abreu is looking for a multi-year deal,
and with the Cubs and Mets both expressing interest in him, it’s hard to
see him settling for one year.
Now, with no draft pick attached to Abreu, he’ll be even more appealing
to other teams, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see his situation resolved
in the next 10 days one way or another.
Andy Pettitte was also not offered arbitration, though under the new rules,
the Yankees can still negotiate with him and the rest of their free agents.
Teams used to have to offer arbitration to continue talking to their free
agents, but now the arbitration decision is all about compensation.
Pettitte would have accepted arbitration, giving him another one-year deal
at about the same $16 million he earned last year. The Yankees want him to
take a pay cut and he doesn’t want to, making for a very interesting
standoff. I’m fascinated to see which side bends, or whether this conflict
leads to the end of Pettitte’s time in pinstripes once again.
I know the Dodgers have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for
Pettitte, but there’s no chance they would pay him $16 million, so if he’s
going to take less, he’ll come back to the Bronx. Perhaps we’ve seen the
last of Pettitte in a big-league uniform.
The other free agents that would have gotten the Yankees compensatory draft
picks were Pudge Rodriguez and Mike Mussina, but those would have made no
sense. Pudge would have taken the offer and made about $13 million next year
to be a part-time player, while Mussina has already retired.
If you remember, the Yankees didn’t offer Roger Clemens arbitration after
he retired in 2003, and when he decided to sign with Houston later that
winter, the Yankees didn’t get a pick from the Astros. Apparently, they
believe Mussina will live up to his word and stay retired. Then again,
even if he decided to come back, it would probably be with the Yankees.
CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe were all offered arbitration by
their respective clubs, meaning the Yankees will have to give up their
first-round pick to sign any one of them. But remember, the Yankees have
an extra first- and second-rounder this year because they couldn’t sign
their picks last year, so they have some picks to play with.
以下FA所屬球隊都有提出仲裁,所以如果洋基簽下任何一人都會喪失今年第一輪的
選秀權,CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett Derek Lowe

Type B:第一輪補償(三明治)
是這樣嗎?
