According to numerous reports, Torre writes in the book that Rodriguez’s teammates called him “A-Fraud” after the three-time MVP developed a “Single White Female”-like obsession with Yankees captain Derek Jeter. Torre also contends that Rodriguez asked for a personal clubhouse attendant to run errands for him. In the past, Torre, who became the Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager following the 2007 season, defended Cashman. In the book, however, Torre claims that Cashman never told the team’s brass that the manager wanted a two-year contract and remained silent during Torre’s final days as the Yankees’ skipper. The 477-page tome also reveals that during spring training in 1999, team doctors told owner George Steinbrenner that Torre had prostate cancer before telling Torre himself. According to the New York Daily News, Torre reiterates that Cashman did not support him during a meeting with the Steinbrenners late in the 2007 season to determine his future with the team. Cashman, however, had publicly stated that he wanted Torre back as manager. The Daily News reported that Torre is scheduled to make a book-signing appearance at the Yogi Berra Museum in New Jersey on February 3 before leaving for spring training with the Dodgers. Torre’s acrimonious comments would seem to be an obvious indication that he remains bitter over the manner in which he parted ways with the Yankees. The second-winningest manager in Yankees franchise history and immensely popular with the fans, Torre was considered a father figure in the dugout. He won four World Series titles with the Yankees and guided the team to the playoffs in all 12 of his seasons as manager. However, New York’s nine-year run as American League East champions ended in 2007, when the Yankees made it into the playoffs as the wild card. Following the 2007 campaign, Torre was only offered an incentive-laden one-year contract that included a 30-percent pay cut. He considered the offer “insulting” and turned it down. Yankees president Randy Levine criticized Torre after most of the media supported the popular former manager. During the closing ceremonies for Yankee Stadium in October, Torre’s name was not mentioned, another indication of the tension between the parties.
