THE 5 BEST OFFSEASONS
New York Yankees
Key additions: 1B Mark Teixeira, SP CC Sabathia, SP A.J. Burnett, 1B/OF Nick
Swisher, SS Angel Berroa, SP Jason Johnson, C Kevin Cash.
Key losses: OF Bobby Abreu*, 1B/DH Jason Giambi, SP Mike Mussina, C Ivan
Rodriguez*, IF Wilson Betemit, SP Sidney Ponson*, SP Carl Pavano, C Chad
Moeller.
Analysis: Yes, they spent the most money, but they spent it on quality
players. There's still a bit of a question as to how Burnett will react to
the New York pressure-cooker, but with Sabathia and Teixeira in town, the
spotlight on him won't be nearly as bright.
Tampa Bay Rays
Key additions: OF/DH Pat Burrell, OF Matt Joyce, RP Joe Nelson, RP Brian
Shouse, OF Gabe Kapler, RP Lance Cormier.
Key losses: OF/DH Cliff Floyd, SP Edwin Jackson, OF Rocco Baldelli, IF/OF
Eric Hinske, RP Trever Miller, OF Jonny Gomes
Analysis: The Rays were very wise and efficient this offseason, trading the
odd man out in the rotation (Jackson) for a guy (Joyce) who could wind up
winning the job outright in right field. And Burrell is the powerful
righthanded hitter the lineup lacked last year; getting him at a discounted
price was just icing on the cake.
Cleveland Indians
Key additions: RP Kerry Wood, IF/OF Mark DeRosa, RP Joe Smith, SP Carl
Pavano, RP Matt Herges, SP/RP Kirk Saarloos, RP Greg Aquino, RP Vinnie Chulk,
SP Tomo Ohka.
Key losses: OF Franklin Gutierrez, C Sal Fasano*, RP Tom Mastny, RP Juan
Rincon, RP Scott Elarton*, RP Brendan Donnelly*.
Analysis: The Indians added much-needed bullpen help in Wood and Smith, and
DeRosa is the kind of clubhouse influence that managers dream about
acquiring. And why not take a low-rent flier on Pavano as a potential fifth
starter?
New York Mets
Key additions: RP Francisco Rodriguez, RP J.J. Putz, SP Tim Redding, RP Sean
Green, SP Freddy Garcia, CF Jeremy Reed, IF Alex Cora, OF Cory Sullivan, RP
Connor Robertson, OF Rob Mackowiak, OF Bobby Kielty, SP, Elmer Dessens, RP
Casey Fossum.
Key losses: CF Endy Chavez, RP/SP Aaron Heilman, RP Joe Smith, SP Pedro
Martinez*, RP Luis Ayala*, 2B Damion Easley*, RP Scott Schoeneweis, OF Moises
Alou*, SP Orlando Hernandez*, SP Claudio Vargas, OF Trot Nixon, SP Jason
Vargas.
Analysis: The Mets accomplished their primary objective (revamping the
bullpen) and their secondary objective (shoring up the rotation). They'd like
to add another big bat or upgrade at second base, but they're locked into
Luis Castillo for another few years at second.
Oakland Athletics
Key additions: OF Matt Holliday, 1B Jason Giambi, RP Russ Springer, RP
Michael Wuertz, RP Kevin Cameron, RP Chris Schroder, 2B Yung Chi Chen.
Key losses: RP Huston Street, OF Emil Brown*, SP Greg Smith, DH Frank Thomas,
RP Alan Embree, OF Carlos Gonzalez, RP Keith Foulke*, RP Andrew Brown*, RP
Lenny DiNardo, 3B Donnie Murphy, OF Matt Murton.
Analysis: The A's struck early with the Holliday trade, and Giambi returns to
Oakland after the quietest 32-homer season in the history of the Yankees. The
A's young pitching staff finally should get a bit of run support thanks to
the improved middle of the lineup.
THE 5 WORST OFFSEASONS
Toronto Blue Jays
Key additions: C Michael Barrett, SP Matt Clement, SP Mike Maroth, C Raul
Chavez, DH Randy Ruiz, SS Brandon Fahey, SP Brian Burres.
Key losses: SP A.J. Burnett, C Gregg Zaun, OF Brad Wilkerson, OF Kevin Mench,
RP John Parrish.
Analysis: When it's possible that your best offseason signings won't make it
out of spring training with the big club, it has been a bad winter. Not
saying the Jays didn't try, but they just didn't get anything done this
offseason. And that could make for a long season in the A.L. East.
San Diego Padres
Key additions: 2B David Eckstein, OF Cliff Floyd, SP Kevin Correia, RP Mark
Worrell, C Henry Blanco, IF/OF Chris Burke, RP Jae Kuk Ryu.
Key losses: RP Trevor Hoffman, SS Khalil Greene, C Michael Barrett, C Josh
Bard, RP Clay Hensley, SP Shawn Estes, RP Kevin Cameron, SP/RP Justin Germano.
Analysis: Just a bad offseason all around for the Padres, with the sale of
the franchise and the inability to trade ace Jake Peavy. Is it 2010 yet?
Minnesota Twins
Key additions: RP R.A. Dickey, RP Sean Henn.
Key losses: SS Adam Everett, RP Eddie Guardado, RP Dennys Reyes*.
Analysis: The Twins still will be in the thick of the A.L. Central race. They
just aren't any better now than they were at the end of the 2008 season.
Minnesota didn't bring in a third baseman to add pop to the lineup and didn't
acquire any bullpen help.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Key additions: IF/OF Eric Hinske, 3B Ramon Vasquez, OF Craig Monroe, RP
Donnie Veal.
Key losses: 1B Doug Mientkiewicz*, OF Jason Michaels, C Ronny Paulino, IF
Chris Gomez, IF Luis Rivas, C Raul Chavez.
Analysis: There's just nothing much happening here.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Key additions: SP Jon Garland, 2B Felipe Lopez, RP Scott Schoeneweis.
Key losses: 1B/OF Adam Dunn*, 2B Orlando Hudson*, SP Randy Johnson, RP Juan
Cruz*, RP Brandon Lyon, 2B David Eckstein, IF/OF Chris Burke, RP Connor
Robertson, C Robby Hammock.
Analysis: The D-backs lost (or will lose) three position players who will
start for their new teams and three pitchers who will play prominent roles
for their new teams. Meanwhile, Arizona's top two acquisitions didn't have
dream 2008 seasons -- Garland had a 4.90 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, and Lopez was
released by the Nationals before the Cardinals signed him.
