[洋基] Scouting the 2009 Yankees
Scouting the 2009 Yankees

March 27, 2009
I chatted with a major-league scout the other day to find out what he thought
about the 2009 Yankees. I know people get tired of hearing what the writers,
sports talkies or talking heads think about the players, so I figured I would
pass along what a big-league scout sees in the players you'll be rooting for
(or booing, depending on your allegiances) this season.
JORGE POSADA
"Your question mark with Posada is how his arm comes back. From what I've
seen, he's going to have to be better than he was this spring or he's going
to be another DH. Teams are going to take off on him. He's a hell of a
player, a great switch-hitting catcher who can still hit, but his arm will
have to be better as the season goes on."
MARK TEIXEIRA
"He's a big-time bat. Everybody likes his bat. He's going to be able to hit,
a switch-hitter with power and a good defender. He can't run, but that's
about it. He's a complete player. They paid big money for him, and like all
of them that go to New York, whether he can play there is going to be the big
question. You go to New York, some guys fold and some guys thrive. This guy
can flat-out hit, so he shouldn't have any problems."
ROBINSON CANO
"Cano, for me, we all thought that he was the second coming with the bat a
couple years back. He's kind of tailed off, but he's still a good-looking
hitter. He's not a speed player, but he's a pure hitter. He's got to hit to
be effective for this club. He hasn't been the hitter he looked like he was
turning into. He's a pretty good defender. He doesn't have a ton of range,
but he has good hands and he can turn a double play."
DEREK JETER
"Jeter is the No.1 guy on the club no matter how you look at it. He makes
that team go. He can play for my team any day. He has the damndest inside-out
swing I've seen in my life. He's a smooth player. He doesn't have a lot of
time left at shortstop, but he's what he should be - a captain. He's the
leader of this team and has the greatest makeup of any player ever. He's the
consummate professional. His defense is solid. He can make all the plays, can
turn the double play and still has good feet. Is he the best? No. But he's
still good enough. I like everything about Jeter."
ALEX RODRIGUEZ
"When he comes back, assuming he's fine, he should be his old self. They're
going to miss his presence in that lineup real bad. Hitters in front of him
and behind him get a different look when he's there and when he's not. A-Rod
is the best player in the game, even if he hasn't always done it in the
playoffs. For 162 games, he's pretty darn good. He has power you have to
always be scared of and he's a great defender. He doesn't run the way he used
to because of his size, though he can still run some when he turns it on.
We'll see how the hip impacts that."
CODY RANSOM
"Ransom has been released twice - and there's a reason for that. He did a
good job last year when he came up, and in the utility role, he's fine. As a
starter, he won't see a fastball. Changeups and sliders get him out, and when
the season starts, that's all he's going to see. Players can live on the
first-pitch fastball in March, but in April that doesn't happen. He's been a
subpar hitter at the major league level, so there's no reason to think that
will change if he plays regularly. If they're lucky, he'll get hot for the
first month. Pitchers are going to slider him to death."
JOHNNY DAMON
"Damon is a slash hitter, so you don't have any idea where he's going to hit
the ball. With two strikes, if you throw the ball on his hands, he's usually
an easy out. For some reason with two strikes, you can put it in there every
time and get him. A lot of teams move the ball away and he slashes it, then
every once in a while he'll sit on something and hit it out of the ballpark.
He's always been a great runner. He's come a long way in his career and found
a way to hit. I don't know how he does it with all that movement, but he can
make contact. He's a dangerous hitter. He never could throw great, but now he
can't throw at all. He's still the best center fielder on the team. He can go
out and get the ball."
BRETT GARDNER
"Gardner has the speed and can flat-out fly, though he'll take a bad break on
a ball once in a while. The only question is whether he can hit enough. If he
can hit .260 and steal some bases, you'd be thrilled with that. He always
looks good in the spring and looks like a heck of a player, but the regular
season is different. I like Gardner though. He'd be my center fielder if I'm
running that team. He has good makeup and great hustle. I like speed and this
team definitely needs speed."
XAVIER NADY
"Nady has looked like a pretty steady, solid average player with some flashes
of above average at times. I like what I've seen of him, and he fits well on
this club as a whole. He brings good tools to the ballclub, especially if
everybody else is healthy. He's not the hitter that Matsui was when he first
got here, but he'll be pretty steady for the most part."
HIDEKI MATSUI
"Another consummate professional. He plays the game the right way, but he's
crippled now. He can barely slide because of his knees. He can't do the
things he wants to do. At one time, he was a solid outfielder in left who
took good routes and got rid of the ball as fast as anybody out there, but he
cant do that anymore. He's basically an RBI guy - and a very good one. He can
also hit lefties, and can still hit a home run. You have to like him, but I
wish his legs were healthier."
CC SABATHIA
"Sabathia is flat-out overpowering when he's right. He can get off-kilter
with his command, but he has great movement in the zone and pure power stuff.
Very intimidating."
CHIEN-MING WANG
"Wang's sinker ball is terrific, but he needs his stuff to be working and his
command to be right. He drives scouts crazy with his windup, but he puts
hitters to sleep. If you don't get to him early, he's got you beat."
A.J. BURNETT
"Burnett is another power pitcher who can be unhittable, but when he's not
right, he can be blown up. When he's healthy, he can pit up big numbers, but
his history of breaking down makes you wonder if they'll get their money's
worth. As a no 3 guy, that's dynamite stuff."
ANDY PETTITTE
"Pettitte has the makeup and pitching savvy among the best, and he'll always
be known for that. He's still a nice lefty who can get it done without the
stuff he once had. He doesn't have the same fastball he used to, but he makes
up for it with his great off-speed stuff."
JOBA CHAMBERLAIN
"The first two outings this spring, he looked terrible, but after he got it
back together, he's had great movement in the strike zone and knee-buckling
breaking balls. I think he's better off as a setup man for Rivera, because it
fits him best to come in and blow it out for an inning or two. Can he be
effective as a starter? Of course. They just have to build his innings up and
hope he doesn't break down. I understand why they're doing what they're
doing."
MARIANO RIVERA
"Rivera is absolutely remarkable. The first couple outings in the spring, he
looked as good as ever. You know what's coming, and whether you're lefty or
righty, you just can't hit it. He's just fabulous. I hope he goes on forever,
even though we know he can't. Teams know it's over when he comes in. As long
as they keep feeling that way, he's got the upper hand. It's a beautiful
thing to watch."
DAMASO MARTE
"I happen to like Marte. As long as his command is pretty good, he's tough.
He's obviously tough on lefties, but I like his stuff all the way around. As
long as he's healthy, he's got solid stuff."
BRIAN BRUNEY
"Bruney has a great arm, but he doesn't pitch with it all the time. One day,
Bruney is lights out and the next day, he struggles to get out of an inning.
He throws 92-94 and sometimes shows good breaking balls with good depth, but
he finds a way to hit some bats at the wrong time. To me, he's every other
game. He needs to be a little more consistent like he was last year. His
fastball gets a little too straight for me sometimes."
NICK SWISHER
"Swisher doesn't fit in this organization. He's a goofball for one, but more
than that, I don't think he's that good a fielder anywhere you put him. As a
corner outfielder and first baseman, he's not what I would call a good
defender. He doesn't run that good. He can jump on some pitches and hit them
far, but you're banking on him doing something with the bat if you're going
to play him. The only way he works himself into the lineup is if Damon or
Nady don't perform."
JOSE MOLINA
"I'm not a big Molina fan. He's the lesser of the three Molina brothers.
Very, very adequate as your backup catcher. His hands are okay around the
strike zone, he can get rid of the ball and his arm is fine. He doesn't move
all that well side to side because he's a heavy thick-body guy. He's fine
because he throws well enough, but his bat is weak."
MELKY CABRERA
"Cabrera can find a way to get some hits. He hits the ball foul line to foul
line. He can do just enough with the bat to be an average hitter, though he
doesn't have the power you'd like. He's not a good runner, so he's a dead
double play guy if he hits the ball on the ground. Outfielders that don't
have big power better be able to run, and he can't, though he's a good
baserunner for not having speed. All he can be is a fourth or fifth
outfielder. I don't consider him a true center fielder because he doesn't get
great jumps and he doesn't have great range because of his speed. He can
catch anything he gets to, but he breaks wrong on balls too often."
