Q: The first time you saw (the old) Yankee Stadium
A: "Holy (cow)!" was the first thing that came out of my mouth! I can't
believe I'm really here! To play on the same field with all the guys that
have come through there - Babe, Gehrig, Mantle, Maris - the list goes on and
on.
Q: How do you think you and the Babe would have gotten along?
A: (Laugh) I think me and the Babe, we mighta been road dogs!
Q: The first time you put on the pinstripes?
A: Oh, man! I made a statement to one of my buddies: "The New York Yankee
uniform feels much more comfortable than any uniform I've ever put on in my
life!" There's just something about it.
Q: Derek Jeter?
A: Captain...theman...awesome dude.
Q: Mariano Rivera?
A: Greatest closer of all time.
Q: Jorge Posada?
A: Ha! Georgie! He definately keeps me on my toes. He definately keep me in
my place. We're always busting on each other. But once 7:05 comes around,
talk about an intense individual!
Q:A-Rod?
A: Greatest ever. Just an awesome guy. Very misunderstood.
Q: How so?
A: If you guys knew him the we do, it would be a totally different outlook on
him.
Q: CC Sabathia?
A: One of the biggest kids I've ever met. In my mind, the greatest
left-handed pitcher in the game right now. And even better clubhouse guy.
Q: A.J. Burnett?
A: Wudeydo. That's my little inside nickname for him.
Q:Joe Girardi?
A: Never want to play for anybody else. There's just something about him,
man. He brings everybody together. Best manager I ever played for.
Q: Could you close for him if need be?
A: (Laugh) I am leaving my career ERA at 0.00! Everyone else was throwing so
hard. I was throwing so soft. My [pitching style] would be a combination of
Mark Buehrle and Jamie Moyer.
Q: You plan on living in NYC?
A: Yup.
Q: Any idea where?
A: Upper East Side.
Q: Favorite NYC things?
A: The fact they can deliver food at any hour of night is pretty cool.
Q: The poem your father gave you -- "The Guy in the Glass" -- constantly
reminds you that someone is always working harder than you?
A: Every time you look at that man in the mirror, you're looking at yourself.
You need to make sure you gave it everything you had for that day.
Q: Superstitions?
A: I call them routines. Then we don't sound like weirdos.
Q: What were you like in school?
A: Trouble. Trouble. I was the kid in elementary school -- you get checks or
check plus -- I would get N.I. for Needs Improvement (laugh). I was good in
school -- I graduated with a 3.7, I wasn't a [dummy] -- but it was hard to
keep my attention for a very long time.
Q: The low point of your dismal 2008 season with the White Sox was not
starting in the playoffs?
A: When things are the hardest for you, that's when you learn the most.
Either one of two things can happen -- you're gonna get knocked down and stay
down, or you're gonna get back up. I got back up. I knew I still had a lot to
prove. I lived in my dad's basement in Parkersburg, West Virginia I needed
that guidance, and I needed him to get me back on the right track and to get
the fire and drive for the game of baseball back. You have to have fun
playing this game. . . . You never know when it's gonna be taken away from
you. I temporarily lost that fire and passion I had for the game of baseball.
Q: You started switch-hitting as a freshman at Ohio State?
A: I used to goof around with it. We'd have Home Run Derby, my buddies would
make me hit left-handed. Some scout told me, "You'd probably hit a lot more
home runs if you hit left-handed." Whoever that guy is, if you're reading
this -- thank you!
Q: Where did you play Home Run Derby?
A: Bennett Stump Field [Parkersburg, W. Va.], down at the city park.
Q: What were the dimensions?
A: 330 left field; 375 in the gap; 395, 400 straightaway; 330 in the
right-center-field gap; about 340 down the right-field line.
Q: Boyhood idol?
A: My father [ex-Cubs catcher Steve Swisher]. I'm telling you man, to have a
father as loving and as caring and as motivating as him, I just don't see
anyone else in my life other than my grandmother I'd want to look up to.
Q: You have a tattoo of your grandmother Betty Lorraine Swisher's initials
across your heart?
A: When my grandmother passed away [in 2005 from brain cancer], I lost my
best friend. The closest person to me in my life was just taken from me. That
was very hard. That's when I said to myself, "She loved watching you play
ball. It's time to get going."
Q: She raised you after your parents divorced. What made her so special to
you?
A: Have you ever seen the movie "Talladega Nights" with Will Ferrell? There's
a line in there -- his mom brings "Granny love." She put Granny love down on
me. She was a wonderful woman. I miss her every day.
Q: What is Granny love?
A: Just [a butt]-kicking, man. I'd step out of line, she wasn't afraid to put
a whippin' on me.
Q: You also have BLS and DES [Donald Eugene Swisher] -- your grandfather's
initials -- on the inside of your batting gloves and the knob of your bat?
A: I know they're watching down on me every day. I don't want to disappoint
them.
Q: You're single, so I can ask -- best city for groupies?
A: They're not really around anymore. . . . If you want to go a city with the
most beautiful women, obviously you have to say New York City. I'd also say
Dallas, Texas.
Q: The Yankees' spring training White House visit?
A: Oh, it was amazing! Who would have thought I'd ever be standing in the
Oval Office where some of the greatest and most important decisions of this
country are being made? I couldn't get over that, man. It was an absolute
blast.
Q: Favorite movie?
A: "For Love of the Game."
Q: Favorite actor?
A: George Clooney.
Q: Favorite actress?
A: Brittany Daniel.
Q: Favorite entertainer?
A: Kenny Chesney.
Q: Favorite meal?
A: Steak and potatoes.
Q: Dinner guests?
A: My grandmother and my grandfather. I'd like to have dinner with them one
more time.
