Yankees Look to Melancon for Relief
BOSTON – As much as his curveball, changeup and 95-mile-an-hour fastball,
Mark Melancon’s makeup has stood out to the Yankees in the three years since
they drafted him. Melancon is polite and respectful, yet confident in himself
and not afraid to say so.
Melancon, a 24-year-old right-hander, joined a bullpen in crisis on Saturday.
In 57 career minor league games, he has a 2.15 earned run average and 114
strikeouts in 113 innings. He believes he could help answer the Yankees’
bullpen woes.
“Definitely,” Melancon said.“I think once you get here, everybody’s
pretty equal. If you go out and do your job and do what they ask of you, I
don’t see why a first-year guy can’t do what somebody else that has some
time can.”
Manager Joe Girardi has seen good and bad from all of his incumbent setup men,
so it is no surprise the Yankees are turning to some of the stars of their
Class AAA bullpen. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 14-2 this season, and Melancon
and Dave Robertson, who was also called up Saturday, had combined to strike
out 31 in 18 1/3 innings, without allowing an earned run.
“Down there, he and I were kind of in the same role,” Robertson said. “If
it was a tight game, one of us was going into it. Now that we’re here, we’
re hoping to stay here. Me personally, I know I have to go out there with
some 1-2-3 innings and earn myself a spot.”
Robertson pitched two scoreless innings in the Yankee Stadium opener on April
16, and after a quick return trip to Scranton, he gave up Mike Lowell's
three-run double on Saturday.
Melancon, who grew up near Denver, said he had goosebumps when he visited
Fenway Park on a family trip at age 14. It was a memorable feeling, he said,
to see the field for the first time, coming up through the tunnel on the
concourse.
Back at Fenway on Saturday for his first day as a major leaguer, Melancon was
not in awe. But as he walked across the field to the bullpen in the sixth
inning, accompanied by Mariano Rivera, the magic of the moment still resonated.
“I was soaking it all up, trying to just look at everything,” Melancon said.
"I knew it was a pretty neat moment.”
The way to succeed, Melancon said, would be the same in the majors as it is in
the minors: throw low strikes and get ahead with the first pitch. As for his
role, Girardi said he would try to ease him into pressure situations but might
not have that luxury.
“We want people to step up, that’s the bottom line,” Girardi said. “Step
up, and you’re going to pitch.”
As ragged as the bullpen has looked, with a 6.68 E.R.A. through Saturday, the
starters are partly to blame. Their starters had worked only 92 1/3 innings,
fewer than every other American League team except Baltimore and Oakland.
“This is something we went through for most of last year, and our guys were
able to survive,” Girardi said, referring to his relievers. “But that is
not something you want to continually do, or they’ll be worn out by the
break.”
