[新聞] In Yanks’ Bullpen, More Than a Little Off the Top

The whipped cream pie to the face is not the only current fad among the
Yankees. The shaved head is also becoming popular, particularly in the
bullpen. The most recently shorn dome belongs to Phil Coke.
He showed up bald and proud of it on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. “I’ve
shaved my head before, it’s not a big deal,” Coke said. “But nobody around
here has seen me with a shaved head. It’s just hair. It grows back. It’s
fun, man. We’re having a good time.”
Coke, a left-hander, had a particularly good time Monday night when he earned
his first major league save during a 7-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins,
the Yankees’ sixth consecutive victory and their eighth in 10 games. Coke
threw 36 pitches over one and one-third innings Monday and 79 over all in
three appearances against the Twins in a four-game series. He was not
expected to work Tuesday when the Yankees opened a three-game series against
Baltimore.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said he expected Mariano Rivera, rested Monday
night, to resume his role as the closer, if needed, as C. C. Sabathia started
against Brad Bergesen.
Regarding Coke’s performance Monday, Girardi said: “I’m happy for us and I
’m happy for him. I thought he did a pretty good job.”
Coke gave up one run, walked two batters and struck out one. It was his 18th
game of the season. He appeared in 12 last season.
Until Tuesday, Coke had sandy blond hair of moderate length and full
sideburns. His locker is next Brian Bruney’s, another reliever with a
recently shaved head. The computer monitor in Bruney’s locker shows a skull
and crossbones.
That boney image could represent a generic Yankees relief pitcher of early
2009. Bruney returned to the roster Tuesday after missing 22 games with a
flexor muscle strain. Edwar Ramirez was demoted to Class AAA
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
“I’m surprised, but I have to be better,” Ramirez said. “It’s probably
better for me because I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do. I have to go
back down there and work.”
Ramirez said his biggest problems were too many walks and poor location. He
said he was “trying to be too perfect.”
In 15 games, Ramirez was 0-0 with a 5.19 earned run average, 15 walks and 16
strikeouts.
Before Ramirez left the stadium, he was one of the Yankees who reacted to Coke
’s new look. “It’s your turn, buddy, let’s go,” Coke said to Ramirez,
referring to getting his head shaved. Ramirez simply smiled.
Rivera, also nearby, looked at Coke quizzically and smiled. Jose Veras, who
also has a shaved head, came by and touched the top of his forehead to the
top of Coke’s head. Several others came by and rubbed their hands on Coke’s
head.
When Reggie Jackson, the Hall of Fame slugger, strolled over, Coke hugged him
and took off his cap to show his head. Jackson, wearing a beret, kept it on
his clean scalp.
“So far, it’s me, Veras, Bruney and Alfredo Aceves,” Coke said of the
bullpen baldies. Coke said Jonathan Albaladejo “is thinking about it; he’s
on the fence now. He’s not sure.”
‘I’M READY,’ WANG SAYS Chien-Ming Wang, recovering from abductor muscle
weakness in his hips, threw about 50 pitches in a bullpen session at the
Stadium and said he wanted to rejoin the roster.
“I’m ready,” Wang said. “There’s no doubt about it. I’d definitely love
to be back here.”
Joe Girardi did not seem as certain, but he seemed encouraged during an
interview with WCBS radio before the game.
“I thought he looked really good,” Girardi said. “A big improvement. We’
re going to have to make a decision in the next couple days.”
Wang, the Yankees’ most consistent starter for the previous three seasons,
sustained a sprained foot last June 17 while running the bases and had an
E.R.A. of 34.50 in three starts this season before being replaced by Phil
Hughes.
The weakness in his hips was thought to be a result of Wang’s altering his
motion after recovering from his foot injury. Girardi said he was not
concerned about speculation that Wang had lost some speed off his pitches;
Wang’s most effective pitch is the sinker.
“The bottom line is location, movement and change of speed,” Girardi said.
“Not so much velocity.”
Also around the clubhouse to work out Tuesday was Jorge Posada, who has been
on the disabled list since May 5 with a strained right hamstring. Posada had
been working out at the team’s farm headquarters in Tampa, Fla., but rain
there forced him north.
Girardi said he was not sure when Posada would return because catchers use
their legs more than most players. “You’re up, you’re down,” said
Girardi, a former catcher. “You can’t necessarily control those things.”
