His wife is about to give birth to their first child, and the Yankees have asked him to fill a role with which he is completely uncomfortable. "This," he said yesterday before the Yankees' rain-delayed 7-3 loss against the Texas Rangers last night, "is very hard for me." Once one of the best starters in the game, Wang is now a long reliever with a 25.00 ERA looking for work while wondering if he will ever regain his place in the rotation. Wang would actually prefer to be in the minor leagues than in the limbo he is in now. "At least I could pitch," he said. "Now I don't know what to do." Meanwhile, manager Joe Girardi and pitching coach Dave Eiland look for solutions while at the same time attending to the more important task of winning games. Their sympathy only goes so far. "I live and die with every single pitch every one of these guys throw every single night," Eiland said. "Of course I feel for him. But at the same time this is the major leagues, we're all grown men. You have to make adjustments to be successful. I tell him to stay the course, that's it's going to change. But this is a bad time for him." Wang was 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA in his first three starts of the season, allowing an unfathomable 23 runs on 23 hits over six innings. It was a stunning reversal for a pitcher who was 46-15 with a 3.74 ERA in the three previous seasons. The horrific start was a direct result of the torn tendon and ligament Wang suffered last June 15 while running the bases in an interleague game against the Astros. He was lost for the season. "It was a long time before I pitched in a game," Wang said. "My mechanics were messed up." Specifically, Wang is releasing his sinking fastball 6-8 inches lower than in the past, which leaves the pitch flatter - and higher - in the strike zone. The error is caused by poor balance, which is in turn caused by poor footwork. Said Eiland: "You can't go eight months and show up at the big-league level and just pick up. These are the best players in the world and they're out for blood. There is no doubt that time off hurt him." The Yankees placed Wang on the disabled list on April 24, claiming he had weak hip muscles that were the result of the foot injury. Wang worked with a therapist in Florida to regain flexibility and strength. "I think it helped," he said. "I felt better when I threw." Wang pitched well in two rehabilitation games for Triple-A Scranton, throwing 13 scoreless innings. The plan was for Wang to pitch at least one more game in the minors to further develop his location and velocity. But when Joba Chamberlain was struck by a line drive in the first inning of a game last Thursday, the Yankees depleted their bullpen to finish the game. Wang was summoned back to New York and put into the bullpen just in case he was needed the next day. He pitched three innings against the Phillies on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits. "He was better. He wasn't great, but he was better," Eiland said. "The only way he's going to get better and get back to where he was is by pitching. Right now, it's hard to get him a lot of innings. But things can change, and until then we'll do the best we can. "You can't do too much stuff on the side because you might need him in the game. It's a tough spot but we're working at it. If we go out and let him throw 35 pitches in the afternoon, he could only go one inning that night." Girardi said with conviction in his voice that Wang is still viewed as a starting pitcher. But with Phil Hughes having pitched well in his last two starts, the Yankees aren't going to make a change in their rotation. Wang is out of minor-league options, so the only alternative is the bullpen. The line drive that hit Chamberlain forced the Yankees to make a move they didn't want to make. "Things are done out of necessity sometimes," Girardi said. "I think he's somewhat frustrated by it, the way you'd expect anybody to be. But he understands we feel strongly about him and we know he's a huge part of our club." Wang is trying to focus on the positives. Physically, he said, he feels fine. He also understands the time will eventually come when the Yankees need him to start. Injuries are inevitable over the course of the season. Meanwhile, he awaits the birth of his son in June.
