CLEVELAND -- For the second time in this game, Yankees manager Joe Girardi
and trainer Steve Donahue went sprinting to the mound after starter Andy
Pettitte threw a pitch. But this time, after Pettitte fell behind 2-0 to
Jamey Carroll, Girardi yanked Pettitte from the game in the sixth inning.
Pettitte left the game with lower back stiffness.
Earlier, in the fourth inning, Girardi and Donahue checked on Pettitte after
he got Ben Francisco to fly out to right. They returned to the dugout without
even making Pettitte prove himself with a warm-up pitch. The Yankees didn't
even get somebody up in the bullpen.
But in the sixth, Pettitte was finished. He started the inning by allowing a
single and his fourth walk of the night (he finished with five). Alfredo
Aceves limited the damage, allowing just one inherited runner to score.
Pettitte's final line: five-plus innings, one run on six hits, five walks a a
strikeout. He threw 84 pitches.
The Yankees lead 3-1 after six.
