CLEVELAND - Chien-Ming Wang has been told the Yankees still consider him a
starter, but want him to pitch out of the bullpen until the opportunity
arises to return to the rotation.
Wang seems determined to expedite that decision. He threw three shutout
innings in yesterday's 5-4 loss against the Indians, striking out three and
throwing his sinking fastball 94 mph. Of the 42 pitches he threw, 28 were
strikes.
Wang said it was the best he has felt since suffering the foot injury last
June 15 that cost him the remainder of the season and led to his poor start
this year. Wang has a 2.25 ERA in three relief appearances since being
activated off the disabled list on May 22.
"The ball is diving again," Wang said. "I feel very good."
Phil Hughes needed 95 pitches to get through five innings and has a 5.45 ERA
over seven starts. The Yankees could return Hughes to Triple-A Scranton and
add Wang to the rotation.
"I'm not going to make a quick decision right now, but (Wang) looks much,
much better than he did. He looks really good right now," manager Joe Girardi
said.
"We've talked all along that we believe Chien-Ming Wang is a starter and at
some point we believe that he's going to be in this rotation. I'm not ready
to say that right now. There's a lot of different things that we can do. I
love the way that he's throwing the ball."
Now he's good: Carl Pavano did not get a decision but again pitched well
against the Yankees, allowing three runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.
Pavano has faced the Yankees twice this season and has a 2.70 ERA against
them.
Pavano is 5-4 with a 5.29 ERA for Cleveland and has made 11 starts. That's
only 15 fewer than he made in four seasons in New York. Though Pavano had
several legitimate injuries, many teammates in New York questioned his
commitment.
"I have no regrets. I learned a lot, and I'm glad I can sit here today and
say that everything I've learned, I've put into a positive light and moved
forward," he said. "A lot of it was devastating; I let a lot of people down
including myself, which was the toughest thing. You learn from it."

Pavano knows how he is perceived in New York.
"It is what it is, what are you going to do? It's so far in the past now, and
every time I take the ball here, it's even further in the past," he said.
"I'm just looking forward to keep moving forward."
Streak lives: The Yankees have won 17 consecutive games without making an
error.
That ties them for the major-league record set by the Boston Red Sox from
June 11-30, 2006.
"You want to keep it going as long as you can," Girardi said.
Cabrera to return: Girardi hopes to have outfielder Melky Cabrera back in the
lineup tonight. He left Tuesday's game in Texas with a bruised right shoulder
after crashing into a wall chasing a fly ball.
Cabrera has been taking batting practice. The switch hitter has less
discomfort hitting right-handed. With Cleveland scheduled to start a
left-hander in Jeremy Sowers, Cabrera should be able to go.
Extra bases: Mark Teixeira hit .330 with a .398 on-base percentage in May. He
had nine doubles, 13 home runs and 34 RBI along with 25 runs scored. He was 2
for 4 with a homer and four RBI yesterday, extending his hitting streak to 13
games, his career high. He's up to .281 for the season. ... Derek Jeter has
hit in 14 straight games. ... Andy Pettitte, who left Friday's game with a
sore back, has been playing catch and remains scheduled to start on Wednesday
against Texas. "It's not 100 percent that he's going to make his start, but I
feel he's going to make it," Girardi said. ... Several of the Yankees took
notice of Texas beating Boston College 3-2 in 25 innings on Saturday night
and were aghast that Longhorns left-hander Austin Wood threw 169 pitches over
13 innings. "It's abuse," pitching coach Dave Eiland said. Girardi couldn't
believe Wood had thrown 30 pitches on Friday as well. "As a father I'd have a
problem with that," he said.
