The most successful franchise in baseball history has - not coincidentally - some of the most successful postseason players in the game's annals. With another Yankee October approaching, the Daily News has picked the team's all-time, top 10 postseason performers Frankly, it was hard to keep it to 10, what with 26 World Series crowns and 48 postseason appearances and some of the best players in baseball history involved. No. 1: Mariano Rivera Not even the famous pockmarks on his postseason resume - that broken-bat flare by Luis Gonzalez back in Game 7 of 2001, Sandy Alomar Jr.'s 1997 homer and blowing a save in Game 4 in 2004 that started the Red Sox comeback – could keep the player that might be the best-ever in October from topping our list. Rivera has an absurd 0.77 ERA (first all-time) in 76 postseason games, 34 saves (first all-time) and has been on the bottom of three championship pileups when closing out the titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was World Series MVP in 1999 and ALCS MVP in 2003. No. 2: Yogi Berra While a few players on this year's Yanks are hoping to "get one for the thumb," Berra's got two handfuls of rings - literally. He won 10 World Series in 14 tries, caught Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956 and had 12 homers, 39 RBI, a .274 average and a .452 slugging percentage in 75 World Series games. His 71 Series hits are the most ever. No. 3: Babe Ruth He called his shot in 1932 (or did he?) and hit 15 World Series home runs while collecting four titles with the Yanks. His career Series slugging percentage is .744. He had a bad Series in 1922 against the New York Giants and was thrown out stealing to end the 1926 Fall Classic, but he also slugged four homers in '26 and batted .625 with a ridiculous 1.375 slugging percentage in 1928. No. 4: Reggie Jackson They don't call him Mr. October because he likes pumpkins - Jackson was one of the game's deadliest bats in the postseason. He is tied for third all-time with 18 postseason homers and fifth in RBI with 48. He was the MVP of the 1977 World Series after slugging five homers - three on successive swings in Game 6. No. 5: Derek Jeter Not only does he hold the postseason mark for hits (153) and games played (123), but he's the author of the famous flip play in 2001, smashed a momentum-squashing leadoff homer against the Mets in Game 4 of the 2000 World Series (when he was MVP) and is Mr. November. Jeter will try to retain that title - which he earned when he hit a walk-off homer against Arizona in Game 3 of the 2001 World Series after the clock had struck midnight on Nov. 1 - this postseason. Also has a .309 postseason average and 17 homers, six of which gave the Yanks the lead. No. 6: Lou Gehrig The Iron Horse won six World Series in seven tries with the Yanks, amassing 10 homers and 35 RBI in 34 games. He scored the winning run in eight different World Series games. In 1928, he dominated the Yanks' sweep of St. Louis, homering four times, knocking in nine runs and batting .545 with a .706 on-base percentage and 1.727 slugging percentage. His career batting average in the Series was .361 and he slugged .731. In the 1932 sweep of the Cubs, he hit three homers and batted .529. No. 7: Mickey Mantle He had just a .257 average in 65 World Series games, but his slugging percentage was an eye-popping .535 and he has more homers (18) and RBI (40) than anyone in World Series history. He's also second all-time with 59 World Series hits and won seven rings in an 18-year career. Mantle walloped Barney Schultz's first pitch of the ninth inning into the upper deck in right at the Stadium to win Game 3 of the '64 Fall Classic, one of four Series walk-offs in club history. No. 8: Bernie Williams He's the only Yankee with two postseason walk-off home runs (Game 1 against the Orioles in 1996 and Game 1 against Boston in 1999) and he's a regular on October's all-time lists - first in RBI (80), second in hits (128), homers (22) and games (121). He was MVP of the 1996 ALCS. No. 9: Whitey Ford Has the most World Series wins (10) all-time as well as the most starts (22). He'd be higher on the list if his record weren't 10-8. But his 2.71 ERA is sparkly, as well as the two shutouts he threw in two starts in a losing cause in the 1960 World Series. He won two games and threw 14 scoreless innings in the 1961 World Series and won MVP. No. 10: Don Larsen Hey, for one day, he was perfect. Since no one else has ever been, that’s enough to get him on this list. Larsen threw a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, striking out seven and throwing 71-of-97 pitches for strikes. The rest of his postseason resume isn't bad, either - he was 4-2 in 10 World Series games with a 2.75 ERA. He even beat his old team in relief in Game 4 of the 1962 Series while pitching for San Francisco. Honorable Mention: Bucky Dent & Aaron Boone Two men with signature moments and the same middle name - Bleepin'. Well, in a certain New England-y part of the country, at least. Boone sent the Yanks to the 2003 World Series with his walk-off homer against the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS.
