NEW YORK -- The Yankees selected the contract of pitcher Dustin Moseley from
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned left-hander Boone Logan.
The Yankees signed Moseley in the offseason to a Minor League contract. If
the right-hander were not in the big leagues by midnight Friday, he could
have opted out of the contract and signed with another Major League team.
"I'm excited. It was a long year for me last year being hurt," said Moseley,
who strained his throwing elbow early in the 2009 season before also
undergoing left hip surgery in August. "Everyone kind of dreams to play for
the Yankees. For it to all take place and come about, it's pretty neat."
Moseley was a starting pitcher for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 4-4 with a
4.21 ERA in 12 games. He was both a starter and a reliever over the course of
four seasons with the Angels, accumulating an 8-7 record and 5.41 ERA in 64
games (23 starts).
"Obviously, he's stretched out, so we can use him long, and we can use him
short," manager Joe Girardi said. "We wanted some versatility and another guy
that could give us some distance."
Still, the chance that Moseley would opt out of his contract was a strong
factor in the decision. General manager Brian Cashman acknowledged that there
was interest from other Major League clubs in Moseley.
"[Moseley] was throwing the best down there [in Triple-A], but the clause in
the contract gave us some urgency," Cashman said. "Right now, as we approach
the 31st, we thought keeping the depth in our organization made the most
sense."
Maintaining that depth is one of the reasons the Yankees sent down Logan
instead of designating another pitcher for assignment. Logan had pitched
better in his second stint this season with the Yankees, allowing two runs in
7 2/3 innings in four appearances.
