NEW YORK -- Joba Chamberlain made a play on Saturday that even his manager
had to admit he'd never seen before, though it won't show up in any box
scores.
Pitching in the ninth inning of the Yankees' 7-3 loss to the Red Sox, the
right-handed reliever stepped off and choked off a pickoff throw to first
base. The only problem was, there was no runner at first base; Chamberlain
had allowed a double to Ryan Kalish.
Chamberlain spiked the throw into the infield grass, where it was retrieved
by first baseman Mark Teixeira. Kalish jogged to third base, believing it had
been a clear balk, but he was sent back by home-plate umpire Chris Guccione,
who had called time before Chamberlain stepped off.
Chamberlain said he'd been deked by both Teixeira and first-base umpire Phil
Cuzzi, who had apparently moved when Guccione called time.
"I wasn't looking, and then I saw them both move," Chamberlain said. "When
you see both moving and you're not looking right away, and then you see them
moving, you just kind of panic. ... There was time [called], though, so the
play didn't really happen."
