The first offer the Yankees made to free-agent shortstop Derek Jeter was for
three years and less than $45 million, according to a report by Ian O'Connor
of ESPN.com.
New York increased their offer to $45 million over three years when the
initial offer was rebuffed.
Coming off a $189 million contract, Jeter is believed to desire another
$100-plus deal.
O'Connor writes that the two sides might eventually meet somewhere in the
middle and agree on a four-year, $70 million pact.

The same source says that Jeter is going to have to accept some sort of pay
cut in order to remain with New York.
The latest offer to Jeter is a three-year, $45 million deal.
New York's next offer is expected to be for a few million more, and Jon
Heyman of Sports Illustrated writes that a three-year, $50-plus million offer
could be extended.
