Dreams, even delayed dreams, may come true for Carlos Beltran.
By the end of this season, Beltran just may get something he yearned for six
years ago -- although right now, that's the furthest thing from his mind.
Back then, before the 2005 season, the free-agent outfielder wanted to suit up
for the team he'll face Friday night -- the Yankees. The Mets had made him an
offer, and he accepted it only after his agent, Scott Boras, had his last-ditch
pitch to Bomber brass turned down. ... The slumping
Yankees could be interested. Jorge Posada has struggled in the DH role -- a
perfect spot for Beltran -- and last Saturday, the former catcher created a
firestorm when he pulled himself out of the lineup when scheduled to bat ninth.
