Jose Reyes to New York Yankees 'not going to happen,' says Brian Cashman, who supports Derek Jeter http://tinyurl.com/6dmkek2 Any conspiracy theorist who has pondered Mets shortstop Jose Reyes being fitted for Yankee pinstripes, either later this season or in the near future, can forget it. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman put an end to speculation Wednesday night. "That's just not going to happen," he said. Cashman gave a vote of confidence to Derek Jeter and the backup who is filling in admirably for him while he works to return from the injured right calf that landed him on the 15-day disabled list. "We have an everyday shortstop in Derek Jeter," said Cashman, who was at the Waldorf-Astoria for the CYO Club of Champions Tribute to receive the Sportsman of the Year award. "And I think we have an everyday shortstop that would be playing for a lot of clubs in Eduardo Nuñez. The Yankees don't have a need now or in the future for a shortstop. "But we do need a setup man." And to that end he said that he's made many calls but only been offered players "that you would expect I wouldn't want." Reyes' recent refusal to engage in discussions with the Mets about negotiating a new contract until after the season could make them inclined to deal him if they fall out of contention. The Mets don't know if they're even in the ballpark with the offer they wanted to make him. But the Yankees aren't going to be an option, and it doesn't sound like they'll be bidders for him come free agency. Reading into what Cashman said, however, Carlos Beltran could work. "I've done three deals with them and they were all pretty big," he said, not speaking specifically of Beltran. "(Armando) Benitez was a big name. (Robin) Ventura for David Justice was kind of big deal, our need for their need. "But it's complicated because ... no one wants to make a mistake in their own backyard. ... No one's going to make that type of mistake too easily. The only way you would typically line up to do something is if the opposing side is so motivated to move whatever they've got." "The only way we probably line up (with the Mets) is when one team is down and one team is up. It's more difficult to do business across town, not because of them but because of both of us." Should the Mets, who are two games under .500, slide further back, then trading Beltran could bring back salary relief or prospects for a financially hindered organization. "I'm not afraid to make a trade with them. I'll do anything," Cashman said. "If I feel I am doing better and we're bettering ourselves, I'll do it. But there's a lot of people in the chain of command that you've got to convince and make sure they feel good about it. I am sure that's true on both sides." Cashman said that Jeter, who is rehabbing in Tampa, is yet to begin baseball activities and seemed glad that the club opted to put him on the DL over his objection when he said "the disabled list definitely turned out to be the safe and right way to go." He also indicated Jeter would need to appear in some minor-league rehab games, putting the expected June 29 return to the Yanks to resume his quest for 3,000 hits in doubt.
