His longtime follower in the batting order, Lou Gehrig, was known as "Iron Horse" for playing in 2,130 consecutive games, a record that lasted for 56 years until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995. Fifty-six: It was 70 years ago when Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56 consecutive games, another astonishing record that still stands.
