Sabathia, which they intend to present to him before he can opt out of his current contract, according to a baseball executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. It is not known what the new offer entails, but it would sweeten Sabathia’s already lucrative deal because the Yankees are committed to bringing him back. Sabathia, 31, has four years and $92 million remaining on his original seven-year, $161 million deal. He can opt out of the contract five days after the World Series ends, which would make him a free agent. The Yankees agreed to the provision as a way of enticing Sabathia to sign in New York after the 2008 season. During his three years, in which he has gone 59-23 (.720) with a 3.18 earned run average, he has proved to be both talented and durable. Sabathia has regularly professed his happiness and deep appreciation for pitching in New York and living in New Jersey. The Yankees are also optimistic that General Manager Brian Cashman’s contract extension will be completed before the end of the month when his current deal, worth roughly $6 million over three years, expires.
