The 39-year-old reliever has made 908 big-league appearances and recorded 187 career saves, but he won't be asked to close in Washington. At this stage of his career, Guardado figures to serve as a setup man and left-handed specialist, while also mentoring the Nationals' young relievers. But Balester's inconsistency at the big-league level, combined with the emergence of several other top young hurlers, could leave his future in the bullpen. The 23-year-old is a combined 4-11 with a 5.87 ERA in 22 major league starts over the past two seasons and has been surpassed on Washington's depth chart by LHP John Lannan, LHP Ross Detwiler, RHP Craig Stammen and RHP Stephen Strasburg. His best chance to stick in 2010, then, could be as a reliever, following the path RHP Tyler Clippard took last season. Gonzalez saw significant playing time in 2009, starting 40 games at second base and shortstop and compiling 291 at-bats while posting a .265 average.
