A Moment in Time: Strasburg at Class AA By TYLER KEPNER READING, Pa. — A giant yellow duck cavorts around the field at First Energy Stadium right now, and a few hundred school children are clustered along the left-field line. Two men wearing “WaWa Fan-Cam” sweatshirts are scanning the stands behind the plate. There are picnic tables beyond the outfield wall, but no stands, just a vista of rolling green hills. And the best pitching prospect in baseball just took off his warm-up jacket. Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall draft pick last season, is about to go to work for the Harrisburg Senators. The Senators, the Class AA affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are facing the Reading Phillies tonight in a double header. Two fans, Patrick and David Jones of Reading, are wearing T-shirts with Strasburg’s name and his number, 37. They scanned the schedule two months ago and ordered the best seats they could find for every game of this series. “It’s the hype, everything that goes into it,” Patrick Jones said, from his seat 12 rows behind the plate. “Everybody touted him as the best amateur pitcher ever. We probably won’t have another chance like this to see him.” “Definitely not for $10 a ticket for seats this good,” David Jones said. It is chilly tonight, with the flags stiff, blowing toward right field. Strasburg is wearing long sleeves and his customary high socks. All eyes will be on him, as always. He is 2-0 with a 0.73 earned run average in three starts at Class AA, and there may not be many more before his next promotion. For now, for a small sliver of time in a career so full of promise, Strasburg is still here. “We were just the Harrisburg Senators last year,” reliever Drew Storen said. “Now we’re Stephen Strasburg with the Harrisburg Senators.
