Nationals Have 'Strong Organizational Interest' in Carl Crawford 8/11/2010 1:55 PM ET By Josh Alper Carl Crawford is going to be one of the biggest names on the free agent market after this season and he's sure to have all the usual suspects lining up to shower him with money and compliments in exchange for his signature on a contract. He might even have some unusual suspects. Ben Goessling of MASN reports that the Nationals have a "strong organizational interest" in Crawford, which is a fairly formal way of saying that they'd like to see him wearing a red cap with a script "W" on it. What it doesn't say is that there's any chance that they'll actually sign him. They had the same kind of interest in Mark Teixeira after the 2008 season and that didn't result in a competitive offer for his services. Simply admiring Crawford's skills puts them in the same boat as the Royals, several Japanese teams and everyone who even occasionally watches the Rays play. To be fair, simply offering a competitive contract wouldn't make the Nationals serious players all by itself. Big-ticket free agents don't make a habit of signing with teams that are on the fringes of contention unless they find it impossible to get offers from teams further up on the food chain. We can be pretty sure that the Yankees will be bidding on Crawford and there figure to be plenty of other contenders in the mix which means that the Nats might have to be content with admiring from a distance. Regardless of Crawford, it will be interesting to see how the Nationals handle their roster construction over the next couple of seasons. Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper are two nice chips to have, but the Nats will have to build a team that can start contending even as they are blossoming. Their indecision about dealing or re-signing Adam Dunn is a sign that they haven't quite figured things out yet.
