WASHINGTON -- The Nationals plan to name Matt Williams their sixth manager in
team history, according to a source. The club, which according to a source
has a news conference scheduled during the first week of November, did not
confirm that Williams had been chosen as Washington's next skipper.
The Nationals would like to keep Randy Knorr as bench coach, a baseball
source said Wednesday. General manager Mike Rizzo was not available for
comment. Williams and Rizzo worked together in 2001 when the D-backs won the
World Series. Williams was Arizona's everyday third baseman while Rizzo was
scouting director.
According to a source, Rizzo targeted Williams, currently the D-backs'
third-base coach, for the position as far back as the summer. Another source
said Williams was Rizzo's top choice, followed by Knorr and Rays bench coach
Dave Martinez.
Rizzo was impressed by the way Williams managed the Salt River Rafters in the
Arizona Fall League last year. The Rafters lost in the finals. One person
familiar with the meeting between Williams and the Nationals said that
Williams knew a lot about the team's Minor League system and talked about his
plans for the big-league club.
Williams already has the respect of Nationals second baseman Anthony Rendon,
who played for Williams with the Rafters.
"He is a great manager, from what I saw. He's more of a players' guy," Rendon
said last month. "At the same time, he knows when to get on people. He
doesn't raise his voice, but he gets his point through.
"I think he was more of a hands-on guy. It wasn't too long ago that he was
[playing]. He gave us a feel on what to anticipate, what to expect while we
were playing out there. That's what I really enjoyed about it."
Orioles manager Buck Showalter was not surprised that Williams is a candidate
for Washington's managerial job. Williams played for Showalter in Arizona
from 1998-2000.
"He's a sharp guy but he's also a funny guy; a lot of people don't realize
the sense of humor he has," Showalter said. "It was a pleasure and an honor
to manage him. I'm impressed with him [coaching] third base, he does a good
job there. That's one of those guys that will figure out whatever he needs to
figure out. He's a student; he'll be a good one."
Williams was also one of the best third basemen in the 1990s, best known for
his days with the Giants and D-backs. He was a five-time All-Star, won four
Gold Gloves and led the National League in home runs in 1994.
The Nationals have been looking for a manager since Davey Johnson retired at
the end of this season. Besides Williams and Knorr, the Nationals have
interviewed third-base coach Trent Jewett, Padres special assistant Brad
Ausmus and Blue Jays coach DeMarlo Hale. Ausmus plans to interview with the
Mariners, according to a source.
看來總教頭已經確定由Williams接手了...
不過不是說要世界大賽過後才公布嘛XD...
