Tigers place Nate Robertson on D.L.; call up Fu-Te Ni from Triple-A Toledo http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200990628019 HOUSTON -- The Detroit Tigers today placed left-handed reliever Nate Robertson on the 15-day disabled list and called up left-handed reliever Fu-Te Ni from Triple-A Toledo to take his place on the 25-man roster. Robertson was placed on the D.L. with a what the club described as a mass in his pitching elbow. Kevin Rand, the Tigers head athletic trainer, said "it looks like" Robertson will have surgery Tuesday to remove the mass from the inside of his elbow. Rand said he would until after such surgery to say how long he expects Robertson to be out. Ni was 3-0 at Toledo and averaged nearly a strikeout per inning. He was signed in the off-season from the Chinese Professional Baseball League. This marks his first time in the big leagues. The move is retroactive to Saturday. To take his place, they purchased the contract of Fu-Te Ni from Triple-A Toledo. He flew to Houston this morning and should be available for the game today. UPDATE: Robertson is flying back to Detroit to have his elbow checked out team doctor Stephen Lemos. Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said the tissue mass in his elbow is like a cyst, and it has been aggravating his nerves, causing numbness and tingling in his ring and pinky fingers. They expect he'll have to undergo minor surgery to have the mass excised, but they hope to do that along the same area where he had Tommy John surgery years ago. The timetable on any return depends on how that procedure goes. Robertson is scheduled to meet with team orthopedic doctor Stephen Lemos in Detroit today and should have the mass removed by Lemos with minor surgery Tuesday morning. "At this point it is hard to put a timetable on it until the surgery is performed because of the proximity to the ulnar nerve," said Tigers trainer Kevin Rand. "He had tingling and numbness into his ring and little finger." Robertson has dealt with masses in his elbow for some time, but this is the first time they've affected his health, Rand said. He likened the masses to bone spurs. "You normally don't do anything until they become an issue." Robertson faced one batter in the Tigers' 5-4 loss to the Astros Friday, surrendering a single. On the year, he's 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 21 appearances. To take Robertson's place on the club's 25-man roster, the Tigers purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Fu-Te Ni from Triple-A Toledo. Ni has a 3-0 record and a 2.60 ERA (34.2 innings, 10 earned runs) with 32 strikeouts in 24 outings in Toledo. "Coming out of spring training we talked about improving his breaking ball," Tigers bullpen coach Jeff Jones said of Ni. "He located his fastball well in spring training, but he needed to work on the breaking ball." When Ni makes his debut, he will be the first Tigers player to hail from Taiwan and just the sixth player in major league history to hail from the small Asian country. "We'll give him a shot, see what he looks like. I like stuff like that," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. Ni was flying into Houston Sunday morning to meet up for the remainder of the Tigers' six-game trip to Oakland and Minnesota.
