Allan Houston always will be remembered as a Knick. But that doesn't mean he
wouldn't like to wear the uniform of one of the Knicks' biggest rivals - the
Nets - someday soon.
Though Houston has received invitations from several teams to attend training
camp, he is seriously weighing the Nets' offer.
"There is a possibility with the Nets," Houston's agent, Bill Strickland,
said yesterday. "The Nets are a real consideration."
Houston was forced into retirement nearly two years ago because of arthritis
in his left knee. Earlier this summer, he told the Daily News he was going to
attempt a comeback, and on Tuesday he held a private workout in Manhattan for
several NBA teams, including the Nets.
Though Nets president Rod Thorn said several days prior to the workout that
he had little interest in Houston since the team has several shooting guards
set to attend camp, the former Knick impressed Lawrence Frank, who apparently
convinced Thorn to invite Houston to camp.
However, a league source said the Nets are merely "curious" to see what
Houston can do at the age of 36 and nursing a not-so-healthy knee. That could
be a sticking point since the Nets are not ready to offer a guaranteed deal
to an older player who hasn't been in the league in two years. If Houston
were to make the team, he likely would receive the veteran's minimum salary
of just over $1 million.
Strickland said he's gotten positive feedback from each of the other teams
that watched Houston work out on Tuesday - the Spurs, Cavaliers, Mavericks,
Heat and Knicks. The Nets and the Cavs supposedly are two of the teams
prepared to bring Houston into their gyms for private workouts prior to camp
but Strickland suggested yesterday that a player with Houston's reputation
shouldn't have to do that.
"I'm inclined to not having him running all over to work out for different
teams like he's a rookie trying to break into the league," Strickland said.
"I'd like to think we could do something more consolidated than that."
The Nets begin training camp on Oct.2. Strickland said Houston will take as
much time as he can before making a decision.
