Without Carter, Nets offense is a no-show

BOSTON -- We interrupt this increasingly ugly season for some dense
statistical minutiae.
The Nets scored 11 points in the second quarter last night.
They were 10-for-22 from the foul line for the first three quarters.
And over one particularly ghastly sequence bridging the last two periods,
they managed just two field goals (on 15 shots) and turned the ball over five
times over nine unwatchable minutes.
If all that doesn't give Vince Carter's recuperative powers the necessary
inspiration, nothing will.
The offense is broken, and unless something drastic happens soon -- say, the
return of an All-Star scorer -- there might be more meltdowns like the one
the Nets experienced last night, when the paint-packing Celtics strangled
them with a 91-69 chokehold at TD Banknorth Garden.
Then again, if you consult the contrarian captain...
"With Vince, we were just as bad," Jason Kidd said. "The whole night we
played defense on the road and we gave ourselves a chance. We missed shots,
we had great looks, they just weren't falling for us."
A chance? Not exactly. The Nets thought they were in the game at the start of
the fourth quarter, but it was an illusion: They opened the period in a
1-for-12, three-turnover sinkhole, and their deficit went from eight to 18 in
just five minutes.
In the end, the cumulative numbers were actually worse than the ones listed
above: The Nets shot 33.3 percent as a team, shot 53 percent from the line
(17-for-32), and their 21 turnovers led to 19 Boston transition points.
"You have to give them credit. Boston is the top defensive team in the
league," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "By and large they scored in the
mid-80s. We've got to find a way to score more than we did. Between our
inability to hit shots, turnovers and missed free throws, those are lost
opportunities. So we just got to collectively find a way."
Indeed, the Celtics, who in the first half looked like the team that played
the night before in Indianapolis, weren't exactly elegant offensively either.
But they had six guys -- including their five starters -- score in double
figures.
The Nets couldn't match their firepower: Kidd filled up the box score (19
points, nine boards, seven assists), but he also committed five turnovers.
Richard Jefferson had 21 points, but started 0-for-6 in the first quarter,
when the Nets led by eight and could have built a legitimate cushion. Antoine
Wright showed for a second straight night that his improved offense was
mostly a result of playing off Carter, not playing for him.
And Nenad Krstic took another step back (1-for-5), and it was bad enough for
Frank to bench him for the entire second half, with Malik Allen (0-for-5)
getting the nod at the start of the third period.
"We've got to get healthy right now," Jefferson said. "It's so sad that
that's a redundant statement with our team over the past two seasons. We're
going to get Marcus Williams back. We're going to get Nenad Krstic right.
We're still missing this guy named Vince Carter."
At least they have the rookie, Sean Williams (14 points, seven boards, four
blocks), who clearly relished the challenge of going head-to-head with his
idol, Kevin Garnett, over many of his 29 minutes of floor time.
It was a homecoming for Williams, who played at Boston College, and he didn't
disappoint his small group of followers.
"I feel the fans out here know what I can do, and I try to go out and give
them a show," Williams said. "Unfortunately we lost tonight, but we see them
two more times this year."
By then, the Celtics might remember the human pogo stick wearing No. 51. He
was everywhere at the defensive end during the second quarter, and had one
terrific defensive sequence that contributed to three straight stops --
staying in Garnett's chest on a baseline turnaround that missed badly,
showing on a penetration that led to a Tony Allen turnover, and then circling
the post (after playing very loosely) to steal an Allen-to-KG entry pass.
By then, however, the Nets offense had caved, scoring six points over the
last 9:19 of the second period, which gave the Celtics enough time to get
their second wind and take a 36-34 halftime lead.
