1.Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls
Chicagoans got out the vote in November, helping Barack Obama take Illinois
by 25 points. It's too bad another promising hometown candidate can't benefit
from the same enthusiastic voter turnout. Rose ranks just fourth among point
guards in the East All-Star voting totals -- after Devin Harris, Luke Ridnour
and the sidelined Gilbert Arenas -- despite his emergence as (arguably) the
best floor general in the conference. Aspiring to become the first rookie
since Yao Ming to participate in the All-Star Game, Rose continues to man the
point with a style and verve beyond his 21 years. His 13-point, 10-assist
effort Monday against the Blazers marked his fourth double-double of the
year.
2 Last Week: 2 O.J. Mayo, Memphis Grizzlies
The most prolific scorer in this year's rookie class is averaging 19.7 points
and could become the sixth player in the past quarter-century to average 20
points in his debut campaign. Following another commanding performance
Wednesday in New Jersey -- 26 points, four rebounds and three assists -- Mayo
suffered a hip pointer in Friday's loss at Toronto but was able to finish the
game. He's expected to be fit and ready for Tuesday's showdown with LeBron
James: a reunion of Ohio high-school legends who won the state's Mr.
Basketball award a combined five times this decade as prepsters.
3 Last Week: 3 Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thinder
The third-party candidate for Rookie of the Year is adding a wrinkle of
intrigue to the Rose-Mayo race. Westbrook notched two more double-doubles
last week, with 16 points and 12 assists in Minnesota and 14 points and 12
rebounds in Chicago. What's more, his on-the-job training at the point is
starting to translate into wins for the Thunder. Oklahoma City has won three
of its seven games since New Year's Eve to improve to 6-33 on the season --
safely ahead of the pace set by the '72-73 Sixers, who finished with
history's worst record at 9-73. over Golden State. He's logged double figures
in scoring in his past 10 games, averaging 16.7 points, 5.7 assists, 4.7
rebounds and 1.1 steals over that span.
4 Last Week: 5 Brook Lopez, New Jersey Nets
The seven-footer out of Stanford has dropped hints of his offensive promise
throughout the year: a 25-pointer against the Hawks in November, a 23-and-12
outing on New Year's Eve in Detroit. But Monday night's explosion against the
Thunder caught everybody by surprise, as Lopez poured in a career-high 31
points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 103-99 triumph. "This is a building block
for him," teammate Vince Carter told the Newark Star-Ledger. "He's definitely
capable of being a go-to guy on his team, an important piece to our puzzle
and to our success. We're going to continue to work with him, feed him and
encourage him." Defense remains top-notch: Lopez is averaging 2.0 blocks,
which ranks tops among first-year players in fourth in the entire league.
5 Last Week: 4 Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies
In the eight games since Darko Milicic was sidelined with a broken right
hand, Gasol has averaged 14.1 points (on 51.1 percent shooting) along with
8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots. He's also recorded four of his six
double-doubles, including 14 points and 10 rebounds on Sunday in New Jersey.
"I think he's learning a trick every day," Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni told
the Memphis Commerical-Appeal. "One night it's Tim Duncan, the next it's Al
Jefferson, the next night it's Shaquille O'Neal. He's growing leaps and
bounds defensively. He's doing better at staying out of foul trouble. I think
other teams also respect the fact that he's not afraid to take a hit."
6 Last Week: 9 Michael Beasley, Miami Heat
That's more like it! Beasley turned 20 on Friday and celebrated the milestone
with back-to-back 23-point against the Kings and Lakers. That marks five
games and counting in scoring double figures for the second overall pick,
who's averaging 18.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists over that stretch.
With his teenage years fading in the rear-view mirror, along with a mildly
disappointing 2008, Heat fans can only hope Beasley rides this coming-of-age
trajectory into a sleeper Sixth Man of the Year candidacy. Maybe life does
start at 20.
7 Last Week: 8 Rudy Fernandez, Portland Trail Blazers
After a four-game stint in the starting lineup, Fernandez returned to his
familiar reserve role upon Brandon Roy's return from a hamstring injury. The
Spaniard showed grit in Saturday's 113-110 win over the Warriors, battling
through a sprained left foot to contribute 12 points and a career-high six
assists. But it's his innovative campaign for inclusion in this year's Slam
Dunk Contest that's really turned heads in recent weeks. Fans can vote
players into this year's competition, and Fernandez is drumming up support on
his Spanish-language blog and a batch of amusing YouTube clips.
8 Last Week: 6 Eric Gordon, L.A. Clippers
Gordon continues to impress with his nose for the goal. Over the past eight
games, the Indiana product is averaging 22.4 points, 2.9 assists and 2.0
rebounds while shooting 44 percent from the field (56-of-127) and 32 percent
from three-point range (12-of-37). He even found a way to contribute Sunday
against Phoenix while battling through a frigid 2-of-14 shooting performance,
dishing a career-high six assists. But don't expect Gordon to receive
national acclaim until those points start to translate into wins: The
Clippers haven't won a game since Dec. 19 in Indiana.
9 Last Week: 10 Greg Oden, Portland Trail Blazers
Given the considerable hype surrounding his long-awaited entry to the
professional ranks, it's easy to focus on what Oden isn't, as opposed to what
he is. Sure, he's foul-prone and inconsistent on the offensive end. But after
scoring 17 points and pulling 13 rebounds in a 109-95 victory over the Bulls
on Monday, the Ohio State product is leading the Blazers with 11
double-doubles. He's also paced the team in rebounding a team-high tying 16
times in just 31 games. As the streaking Blazers look more and more like a
sure thing to make the postseason, it's tantalizing to wonder how much more
improvement Oden can manage by playoff time.
10 Last Week: NR Kevin Love, Minneosta Timberwolves
Unbeaten through five games in 2009, spirits are high in Minnesota -- along
with Love's rebounding haul. In Wednesday's victory over the Thunder, Love
posted his sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 boards. He
pulled 12 more Saturday against the Bucks, upping his rookie-best average to
8.2 rebounds. But as his production rises, his once-active blogging habit has
taken a hit. Get back at us, Kevin!
