EAST RUTHERFORD — After what the Nets are enduring you would think Rod
Thorn wouldn’t want to watch much basketball in his spare time. But the Nets
president has seen more college games than ever before in his 10 seasons with
the team.

The June draft may be the most important in the team’s history, after all.

The Nets’ only reward for this awful season, that continued with loss No. 60
after Atlanta laughed its way to 108-84 victory Tuesday night at Izod Center,
is a high draft pick.

They will have a 25 percent chance of winning the No. 1 overall selection,
which would give them their pick of Kentucky point guard John Wall and Ohio
State guard Evan Turner. The Nets are assured of a top four pick. They also
have Dallas’ first-rounder — currently in the mid-to-late 20s — and the
first pick of the second round.

infection, but the Hawks didn’t have All-Star Joe Johnson because of Achilles
’ tendinitis and still had more than enough to easily win.

The Nets need three wins in the final 15 games to avoid tying or setting a
record for the NBA’s worst season, owned by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers,
who were 9-73.

“I want to get three wins, more than anything,” Courtney Lee said. “I
think it’s on everybody’s mind. You can see there’s a sense of urgency
about it, because it comes up a lot. And it’s going come up a lot more if we

As the Nets continue to try to avoid more humiliation, their scouts are busy
putting together reports on prospects for June.

Thorn isn’t sure if he will go to any of the NCAA tournament games that
begin later this week. Generally, the Nets don’t send scouts to the sites.
The NCAA controls the tickets and the seats usually aren’t good. They can
see what they need on television. Many NBA teams do the same.

possessions of a certain player he can have a DVD almost immediately.

But the Nets have done their work early by going to regular season games and
conference tournaments.

The Nets’ scouting staff has seen Wall and Turner more than 10 times in
person this season. By extension, they’ve also seen Kentucky big man
DeMarcus Cousins, projected to go in the top five.

Thorn has seen Wall, Turner, Cousins and Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson play at

are considered the first five picks in this draft.
