NEWCASTLE United boss Kevin Keegan revealed an ankle injury was the
reason Alan Smith missed the pre-season friendly 2-2 draw with PSV
Eindhoven.
Newspaper reports have seen the 27-year-old linked with a move away from
Tyneside this week and his non-appearance in the 17-man squad for the game
against the Dutch champions fuelled rumours in some quarters.
But KK - who started with wingers Damien Duff and James Milner up front in
Smith's absence - cleared up the situation afterwards, explaining:
"He's got a sore ankle.
"I knew when I left him out that it would cause you (the Press) to ask
questions but I can't treat him any differently to anyone else. I haven't
risked anybody.
"He's a smashing lad, he's very very popular at the club and he can play
in a lot of different positions, so he's a valuable player for us."
